Defragment your Hard Disk Drive !
Like once a week, minimum.

If you can, use Diskeeper and run a boot-time defragment at least once per week.
Other defragmentation options available with Diskeeper, and temporary changes made to your Virtual Memory (Paging Files) settings (immediately before defragmenting) will improve overall performance.
But, not knowing the details of what you have for a system means it is better to not give a lot of detailed 'tips' now...
Would also be good to check your 'normal' Virtual Memory settings and... wow, a really crazy one... the settings in Internet Explorer for the amount of disk space to be 'reserved' for temporary internet files...

Default And, of course...

One other little 'trick' you can try to certainly improve overall performance and also regain quite a bit of user-access to the computer...

It is a general 'fix' available from Micro$haft, and most users find, after applying this 'trick', that there is certainly a general improvement. Plus, there are only a few steps to watch out for when attempting to install the 'fix'...

The 'trick' ?
Remove Windoze XP and install, with a full format, Windoze 2000 Professional.

I don't remember seeing ever Kazaalite maxing my bandwidth (125KB/s or 1mbit/s) which LW does quite often. Also remember that most people have a much lower upload bandwidth than dl so it's normal to not reach you max speed. Best thing to do is to dl kazaalite (from LW) install it and test it concurrently with LW. Post your results here.

Ciao

HOW would you suggest that a user try to concurrently test both applications in so-called 'real time' and with all parameters equal ?
What would you suggest regarding the minimum time such an experiment should have as its course ?
What 'test criteria' would you suggest in order to 'normalize' the test... i.e. what file(s) to be chosen for Search, Download and Upload ?
The files must be the same for both 'clients'.
The connections must be absolutely equal.
The system resources available must be identical.
and, errr, a long list of other thingies that gotta be the same...

At best, the resultant can only be an extrapolation...

Engineers know that extrapolation is a really nifty word that actually means to bulls*** oneself !!!
Scientists have even funnier definitions for it...

Ursula, I'm a scientist, and I know that all these parameters should be taken and weighted This is not what is important from a user point of view: the user will have a feeling that an app will be faster than an other and it is subjective, however he will choose one. Why do you think shareaza displays bandwidth in kbs instead of KBs? It makes think users dl go faster. Why do bearshare shows 1% dowloaded of a file at the very moment you get the first byte of a download? Also for the speed feeling. What I say is that every users should make their mind by trying competition and then have real (read subejective but important to them) reasons to use a product instead of an other.
EllisD post your findings please they might differ than mine.

Hey all--for additional port information, see Jens-Uwe's explanation for "which ports?" once those darn ports are properly configured, p2p apps really fly. Took months for the experts to get me to understand what settings to use.
