Slow downloads hey i no this is a stupid question but can anyone tell me why some files take so much longer to download than others. yesterday i downlaoded a file size 431MB it was going at 55KB/sec and today a similar size file on the same connection type is going at 1KB/sec. is there anything i can do to stop this?? thanks anu |
Re: Slow downloads Quote:
There has to be an obvious explanation. I've been trying to download a 259mb file for two weeks!!!!!! With DSL???? And Limewire Pro??? I didn't have these problems with Limewire Basic. I paid for this??? makes pro sound like, look like, spyware |
slow downloads Peerless you should try giving better customer service. i too paid for limewire pro - turbocharged and i can tell you that downloads of 1-3kbs average are not worth paying a lot of money for. i have highspeed, 1GB of ram and was sukked in by the TURBOCHARGED CLAIM. change your advertising and tell truthfully what speeds to expect |
Customer service? Dude, this is a forum made by users for users! Again, your highspeed connection is useless if the source has a 56k modem. |
LOL! You mean a turbocharged car won't get through a busy drivethrough at MacDonald's faster than my little Volkswagen? Geees! What a waste of money :p And congrats Peerless--sender2 thinks you are Mr Customer Service. I guess your volunteer help is good enough to be called professional! sender2--you owe peerless an apology: he is a fellow user helping out his peers like the rest of us. LimeWire Pro support is available here http://www.limewire.com/english/content/proform.shtml |
Downloading from 45 sources and it still creeps along at 1kb is out of the ordinary. It shouldn't do it. There must be a reason... |
There indeed must be a reason, and it looks like a firewall. However, if you're the yblt that's been having troubles for quite a while (register dammit if you really want help: do you really expect others to take the time to look up your specs?), I'd suggest you call your ISP and confirm that they do indeed allow filesharing, especially to the gnutella network over port 6346. |
Hey, I appreciate the help. Not really into registering and I understand if your'e not into helping me because of it. Firewall is NOT an issue and my ISP used to be just fine and they haven't changed anything. I have XP Pro and a cable modem. Nothing has change on my enduntil 2 weeks ago I wasn't able to connect at all and now I can connect which is cool, but it is extremely slow. Where I was downloading at 35-60 KB, it is now 1-4 KB. |
Fair enough--you can always dump the stats other posters need into a sig or something. I don't know anything about XP (OSX here), but when someone else noted a change, I couldn't confirm the problem http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...7785#post87785 Maybe if you try the same test that will give you more info to work with. Can you rule out that it's not just the hosts serving up the file? That's the usual reason speeds are inconsistent--the only way to get around this is to find lots of sources. An other setting that might limit the sources you can find is if "Allow Partial Sharing" is turned off in the uploads options. That's all I can think of for now--hope you can get better speeds. Cheers |
Hey, thx again. I ruled out the host as I downloaded from 43 sources of T3 or higher and it went to 3kb. I have either excellent or turbo charged connection by the way. I made sure "Allows Partial Sharing" is turned off as well. I even tried yoyr amusing test to no avail. Maybe one day it will just be faster just like one day I wasn't able to connect and then all of a sudden I was. Alas... |
Ah--try again with partial file sharing turned ON btw--if you check the bug report option--"view example"--look for the line that says "accept incoming this session=true. If it says "false", somethinng is blocking incominng connections. (a restart might be in order too in case java is locked up somehow) curious about that 'test'--I must have just hit a really fast source at the time. |
Nothing worked BUT an interesting development has ocurred. My Desktop downloads at acceptable levels (11-13 kb) but my laptop which is where I was trying to download from is the slow one (it didn't use to be that way). My connection is fine (54 MBPS). I wonder what setting is different etc? |
Probably the host. Do you connect to the internet over a home network or just switch the cable connection between the laptop and the desktop? Did you find the line about "Accept incoming this session=true"? ( in your tools->options->bug reports->view example). |
from fast to slow also. I am having a similar problem. I just upgraded to LimeWire 3.8.10. For the first few hours I was enjoying 50-70 kb/s like I always have with LW. Not sure what changed, but next time I started LW a few hours later, downloads were at 1-14 kb/s, and this is where I've been stuck ever since. This is what I tried so far: 1. set my upload bandwith to 10% 2. disallowed partial sharing 3. max upload slot at 1 4. adjusted my firewall in OS X to allow LimeWire/Gnutella 5. force local IP is on 6. set search result speed DSL or higher 7. set search result at quality 3 and 4 stars I sent an inquiry to my service provider about my ISP, haven't heard back yet. What else can I try? |
Hi Shui could just be the luck of the draw: looks like you're set up fairly well (go ahead and allow more uploads--they shouldn't affect your downloads until they consume ?85% of your upload bandwidth). Some other suggestions: --turn PFS back ON (to take advantage of multiple hosts) --download the beta --check that you can receive incoming connections (see above) |
