Question Slow Download Speeds...

Hey,

I'm experiencing extremely low download speeds. I have a 512k connection, and usually download files at around 50-60kb/s. But whenever I use a filesharing application, this speed drops considerably.

When I download a file from Kazaa, from a high bandwidth user, I get speeds of no higher than 5kb/s, usually below 1kb/s. Limewire is slightly faster than Kazaa, I get seeds of around 10kb/s.

However, I spoke to a friend who has a similar connection to mine (600k) and he says that he downloads files off kazaa at aprox. 60kb/s.

How?- I set my connection appropriately (Cable/DSL), yet I fail to get speeds faster than dial-up, even though I download from high bandwidth users.

How can I get these speeds?

- Tom

I should have also mentioned that I followed the instructions of the sticky post at the top of the forum about how to increase the download and upload speeds.

Where do you know that you're downloading from a high bandwidth user? The connection speed is custom configurable and many people think that they have better download chances with their 56k modems if they select DSL or whatever as their connection speed. And even if your source has broadband, he is maybe busy serving other users too.

Try to download files with may sources (see picture) and give the Modem sources a try (they are sometimes actually broadband).

Look for a post by ursula (I think the thread was named "need for speed" or sumthin').
This particular post managed to get me speeds of up to 125kbps with a 1024k connection (I still can't figure what dudes like rkapsi here do to get it going at over 160...).
By adjusting a friend's LW for his 512k connection by following these same (although adjusted) steps, we managed to get speeds of up to 65-70kbps (hehe, he's still too slow for me; eat my electronic dust dude!).

hahaha because he has a faster connection mec! 1024Kb/s = 128KB/s (as reported in LW, a KB/s = 8Kb/s). Doh that Kapsi guy, he is so special

Hi murasame,

1024k(bit) are 125K(Byte) and 512k are 64K (you must divide your downstream by 8). You and your friend have both hit your maximum download speed (it's time to get a faster connection ). I have a 1.5Mbit line (i.e. my maximum download speed is ~187KB/s)...

DAMNIT!!!!

It's true. Bouhouhouh

And I was hoping (what with all this fuss about super fast connections and very high speeds here in France) that I would be able to get over 150 someday...

This connection I got is one of the fastest available in France mind you, the current fastest being at 2048k I think.
Man, and to think that people here (me included) are bragging about their speeds and stuff and the ISPs making us think that we are the best and everything...

ARGHHHHH!

I should move to the US...

nah - - - Canada! Looks like over 1/2 of the fastest ISP's are Canadian (and sharing music is still legal until the CRIA's appeal is heard!)

Can you look up/compare your ISP here? http://www.broadbandreports.com/archive?all=1

(why not Québec?) hmmm, I have a 1024/320 connection even if my ISP gives users 3000/800 normally, because my phone line is supposed to be busy (read noisy) and it is bad for DSL... Should I cry ? On the bright side, 1024/320 is still a heck of a connection compared to a 56k...

Ciao
