Is that the same for all the music you dlded?
Maybe it's your player that is at fault here.
Try using other players to listen to the same tracks and see what happens.

This problem always occurs using the Limewire player. Have you tried an external player?

downloads were not playing cleanly in limewire but did play in another player. how do you save into another player for easy access to the music?

Depends on the player you have:
in iTunes you just use LW's "iTunes support" function and the songs are directly saved in a LW exclusive playlist in iTunes.
For windoze players I have no idea how you would do that. The only way I can think of is to find LW's shared folder and just go there everytime you wanna listen to a song.
