I've already searched through all the video threads...but I have a different problem. When I try to play a video in Media Player, I get a black box that has License Acquisition in the title bar (or something to that effect). The black box won't do anything, the video won't play, and if I close the box, the player closes too. No other program will even recognize the video file. I'm using LimeWire on XP with 64K dial-up. Please help me if you can!

Media player to my knowledge will not play video (happy to be corrected). However you can launch videos via LW which will open your default video player for that file. You need to have dwnlded at least a small % before you can preview (launch) it. It sounds to me you don't have the correct codecs for your video players. If none of your other apps will play the file it's either corrupt, needs a certain codec to play, or is a 'virus'. Some files simply don't play very well or not at all anyway (corrupt) possibly due to their particular encoding technique. I certainly don't know about this player that's showing up. Sure it's not the sole survivor of a previous app you once used? If you can find any app that opens it, them go to properties of that file & make that app the default player for it. Perhaps you also might try looking around for alternative players. VLC (not a great app but) will play most video types without having to obtain xtra codecs. There's many others.

Media Player won't play videos? Then what, praytell, are .wmv's? Media Player will play any video I have except the ones I download off Limewire. And I scan the files for viruses before I run them. Anyone else have any advice?

Did you know 'some' wmv & wma files are licenced, perhaps that's advice. I'm on a mac so I have as little to do with Microsoft & their sneeky licencing as possible. I'm unsubscribing from this one. LW is not a video player. I don't think you read my thread properly anyway.

I'd be happy to be corrected if the person knew a from z. Everytime you launch a file (perhaps excluding mp3 b/c LW can play mp3's), LW connects to the properties of the file & whichever app has been specified to open that file will attempt to open it. This doesn't always work. But I think you'll find it's not LW attempting to play your video files but another app. YOU need to specify how that particular file opens within your os. I'm sure you know how to access a file's properties & specify which app should be the default app to open it. I know how to do it on Windows yet I don't even use windows. yuk microsoft! Yuk! Get away from me!!! Run away, run away! And that gets back to your video app having the appropriate codecs & licence to play that type of file. (Enough, enough, I'm getting butterflies praytell in my ears, eeeeh!)

yes, I did that...and I have Media Player set to automatically download codecs

Hah! Now that I read a little more carefully (it is 6 a.m local time after all...) your posts, I think that you've misunderstood each other: by reading Media player, Lord must have thought of the Limewire built-in Media player (actually only an .mp3 player) while Butterfies was refering to WMP (Windows Media Player's initials).

You may be right. I'm new to LimeWire and didn't even know there was a built-in player. And I'll give that other player a try. Thanks.

NO! NO!!! DON'T!!!! AUGHHHH!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!

The above *ahem* statement is intended to hopefully make you understand that using the built-in player is not recommended (by me), mainly because it was not intended to be the highest quality player in the world in the first place. It's main purpose is for previewing dlds that can be previewed while they are still dlding. You can of course use it for listening to everyting finished but results vary greatly depending on your configuration. For better results, stick with other players.

the built in player is not recommended by anyone no offence to the creators of it and all but it's slow to open, hogs the ram and is low quality.
