Question Upload And Download Speed

This is probably a noob question but i heard once the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. I was wondering if the amount of uploads you have running is the cause for any large files to try to get to be very slow. MP#'s are always fast for me, usually between 50kb/s up to 200 kb/s. I often see with large downloads, 100mbs or more, like 8 hosts and speeds of like 4kb/s. If this is normal just tell me im a crazy noob.

P.S. I have RR Premium, 512kb up / 6mb down

A DSL connection uses dedicated bandwidths for upload and download (you should know that: that's the reason why you have 6Mdown /512Kup).
I would nonetheless try some of these out. Also, it could be that you aren't connected to all 8 hosts yet. Give it time to connect to all of them.
Also, a T3 host has waaaaay more upload bandwidth that a Cable/ADSL user, so dlding from T# connections should help increase dld speeds (you should be careful of some T3 users though: some serve fake files)

Ok most of that sounds good, now i have some new questions. I also went to my isp over the past month doing speed tests, (just upgraded from regular cable to premium cable), to catalog my results as bandwith with cable is pooled so i have gotten my average over a month. I am wondering first, since you sound like you know what your talking about with limewire what u would suggest for my upload slots. I have it currently set to 3 per person and 3 slots max. I set the upload bandwidth to 43KB/s, down from unlimited, as per your suggestions. I have noticed that i get a bunch of queued ( 5 or 6 on average) people and my speeds drop when that happens.

2004-11-02 14:07:41 EST: 5425 / 480
Your download speed : 5555865 bps, or 5425 kbps.
A 678.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 491722 bps, or 480 kbps.
A 60 KB/sec Transfer rate

Now for step f. I had my conns set to 10 ( long time dialup user, old habits die hard) and i have steadly increased them up to 25 so far but the most im seeing is up to 300KB/s with the file "over and over again" by nelly with 900+ hosts. I am wondering if it is possible for me to see close to the 678KB/s with limewire. Also these results are always great with mp3 files. My problems with speed are only with large files, zips and rars. And these 3 files have been trying to dl for 1 week steady now, so i would hope they are connected. I am refering to files over 100Mb, 2 are 600+ and one is 400+. The 400mb file is about 87% complete after 1 week. All have 20+ hosts. Again any help would be appreciated. And thanks very much for the info so far, it is very helpful and im finally starting to get a handle on the inner workings of limewire.

1 week and it's still not finished?

...

That seems kinda long...

I have it set to 40 slots for downloads and usually it takes far less that a week for a 700M file...

I have set it to 10 upload slots and it seems to work fine (my upload bandwidth sucks big time).
You probably will never come close to that kind of speed however as you will either have to connect to a lot of T3s or even more DSL users. That's because, as you probably know, most DSL are assymetric (hence the A in front of ADSL), which means upload and download bandwidth are not the same. I have what is apparently called "lo ADSL" (or something like that) which basically means that my upload bandwidth is nothing compared to my download one. And that's not good for the network.
As for large downloads, I think that it could be because larger files are more complicated that they slow down the transfer. I can't tell you fer sure as I'm not a programer (or anything remotely connected to that).
Anyhoo, try increasing a little your upload slots (not per person) and also increasing the number of simultaneous dlds.
