Snail Speed

Ihave cable I usually get DL speeds of up to 100K. I upgrade to XP sp2 and sincethen the highest speed Ive gotten is 5K. Its usually 0K(zero). My limewire is also unstable , It hangs alot, and generates errors. I downloaded the latest version and it still hangs and slow speeds. Also JAVAW seems to be eating a lot of CPU cycles. I downloaded a new copybut same results...
Help I miss my limewire

Do you really need SP2? It's really only designed for major networks or if you have a business. Not for the average home user. A couple of options:
1. Uninstall SP2
2. Run a SP2 patch & follow the instructions HERE (click on link) & read up more HERE
SP2 reduces your connectivity & also changes your firewall settings back to default. Check your Firewall settings here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

You might also want to double-check you have up to date Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)

I have uninstalled SP2 and Im still getting < 1k d/l speeds . Other programs have no d/l problems. My stats show no UDP packets is that aproblem. I will trychanging tcp port
Also no connection last more than 1 minute if speed goes over 2K
When I exit and come back Iget "unable to restartdownloads"

Leave LW running for at least 30 mins & do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image & tell us whether your result is True/False.

Have you configured XP & any other firewall yo uhave to allow LW & Java to have full access? See Firewall instructions Which ones do you have?

Also can you tell us your Modem & router brand name & model numbers

trsands December 14th, 2004 10:50 AM

Test gives true
also
Maxbytes /second= 243 !!!
I have turned off firewall
No difference

Lord of the Rings December 14th, 2004 11:01 AM

It's got me stumped. Unless we go thru your settings. Your LW 'hanging' is not a good sign. (I suppose you could update to Java 1.5 It's been good for some but others not.) In your LW settings: Tools>Options>Speed do you have Ultrapeer option or have you ticked it to disable UP? Do you wish to act as a UP?

A piece of advice, don't use the Resume button on too many files in a session. If yu apply it to too many, your files will queue for much longer & it may affect LW's connection quality.

Also see some hints on optimising LW: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

This is frustrating to the max.
I have removed all the hotfixes going back 2 weeks,
I have unistalled SP2
Uninstalled and reinstall LW and JavaW
I have disabled my firewall and even tried 10 hail marys Im about to call the Billy Graham prayer line!!!

Downloads from places like download.com come at 70 to 300 K
My l/m average is < 1
Before removing the hotfixes I had the same problem with IMESH and WinMx but now IMESH gives 40 to 70K speeds. I hate using IMESH or WinMx!!!!!!!!

My only option seems to be reinstalling the O/S....

The L/M search speeds are lightening fast I get returns almost instantly

I spoke tooquicky it appears that IMESH also seems to have difficulty making and maintaining connections

When I look at the status on my LAN connection in XP I am receiving approx 50K per second.

This resembles a DOS attack I guess I need a home 'Sniffer' to figure out what the other traffic is.

Im also gonna scan for spyware adware etc

Also my PC is sending out about 80K/sec while my L/M uploads are < 1K

I have even tried killing unkown processes in task manager.....
nada except there is an instance of SVCHOST with no user name that regenerated every time I kill it hmmmmm???

Thats enough for a while Im gonna call the prayer line I really dont want to reinstall the O/S but looks so

Lord of the Rings December 14th, 2004 07:46 PM

That really does sound suspicious. Somebody just within the last 6 hrs was having a speed problem with mysterious outgoing taking up their bandwidth.

I'd do a thorough check with:
ad-ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spy Sweeper http://www.webroot.com/wb/downloads/index.php
& your anti-virus softw.

INTRODUCTION
This article describes Svchost.exe and its functions. Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).
MORE INFORMATION
The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.

I forgot to mention you should not just kill processes because you do not know what their purpose is. Many of the processes will restart themselves if needed, or your system will crash if you select a needed process.

Seems the best thing to do there if you can't get it to work soon is to format your drive and reinstall your system and just don't put the SP2 on it.Same thing happened to me and thats all I did. Some people SP2 works fine and others it does not.If its not broke don't fix it to break.

Folk this is the root of the problem....Ijust cant figure out how to apply the patch. DOS prompt and start|run both give error

• What's this EventID 4226?
• Which effects does this limit have?
• How can I find out, if I'm affected?
• I read something, that it's possible to change limit via regsitry. Is that true?
• 50 concurrent, half-open connections is to less for me. Is it possible to get more?
• Which other parameters does exist?
• Which languages are supported?
• I have Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP SP1. Will these get supported soon, too?

What's this EventID 4226?
The EventID 4226 means, that there are to many concurrent TCP connection attempts. A connection attemp is a query to a computer, if it accept the TCP connection or not. If the computer is for example no more existent, it will be waited for a few seconds, until a timeout occurs and the connection attemp get canceled.
Since XP SP2 there are only 10 concurrent TCP connection attempts possible, while in SP1 it has not been limited.

Which effects does this limit have?
Applications with many connection attemps may work bad or not at all. Even web browsers, eMail clients or antivir programs can be affected and might bring a long time of waiting.
Also administrative diagnosticprograms in companies make problem. In short, there seems to be more problems than there is an advantage.

How can I find out, if I'm affected?
Just have a look at Start/Maintenance/Control Panel/Administration Management/Eventview/System if there are entries with the event id 4226. If yes, minimum one time the limit has been reached

I read something, that it's possible to change limit via registry (TcpNumConnections). Is that true?
Unfortunately not. Because the concurrent connection attemp limit has nothing to with concurrent connections, this registry-key is useless. Unfortunately there is no registry-key, which would allow the user to change the concurrent connection attemps.

50 concurrent, half-open connections is to less for me. Is it possible to get more?
Yes! Just use as a Parameter /L=limit, where limit describes the new limit.
For example a 100 limit can be set with the command:
EvID4226Patch /L=100

Which other parameters does exist?
Not entered yet ...

Which languages are supported?
Theoretical every lange is supported. If not, please contact me!

I have Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP SP1. Will these get supported soon, too?
Because the limit got introducted in XP SP2, the other operating systems are currently unlimited.
Exception: Windows 2003 Server seems to be limited as well since SP1 beta. An update will follow ...

Patch program can be found at

Will let you know tomorrow it 3:45am

Patch claimed that I didnt need it. I think this problem is somehow affecting Buffers and handshaking. If one uses aprogram like Imesh it lyshow the individual host connetions. What I see is each conection lasting about 5 seconds all it appears to favor the slower speeds like .1Kb or even 0.05K. When ahostconnects at say 25K it is almostinstantly blocked. I am now convinced that this is part of amaster plan by 'the man' to stop peer-to-peer.So far its working. I have only been ableto get 5 files in the past week. Later today I will reinstall windows SP1 becauseIt appears SP2 is a trojan horse........
They should rename it SP2P because it Stops Peer2Peer!!!
