Default U/load affecting D/load

If someone is Uploading from me, does this affect my Download speed? Not that I need to worry as for some reason no one has ever been able to upload from me. As this is not in the spirit of sharing I would like to cure this prob'. I use a Belkin router which for some reason will not accept my 6346 port requests, on a wireless network, even with the IP forced in LW, (Dell laptop, 1.4 Pentium processor, 256 ram, LimeWire Pro) Finally as I am new to this, is a download speed of 0 - 9 kbs usuall, I did get 48kbs once. Sorry if these are old and boring questions to you, I did do a search but came away none the wiser, (I am not much of a techy) Many thanks Paul

1. Indeed your Belkin router does have an internal NAT firewall which will at least block anybody from uploading from you. You can overcome this by opening port 6346 within it. This is called port forwarding. Can you tell us the model number of the Belkin?

2. Can you tell us which operating system you use? (eg: Windows 98, if XP does it have SP1 or SP2?)

3. Can you tell us which firewalls you have?

Thanks for such a quick reply. Belkin Cable/dsl Gateway Router Mod No F5D7230-4, Windows XP Home Edition with SP2, and the only firewall Im using is the Belkin (WinXP disabled). I have tried to add this port but it won't take, all other ports I've added work fine.

1st you'll need to set up a static ip which is why it might not have worked for you before. Without a static ip, everytime you log onto the comp your ip would be different & thus the settings would be useless. So ...

1. URL=http://http://www.portforward.com/belkin/f5d7230-4-dhcp.htm]Setting up a Static IP Address with the Belkin f5d7230-4[/URL]

2. Port forwarding instructions for the Belkin F5D7230-4 Use Port 6346.

You said the only firewall is the Belkin. But XP has its own firewall: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Problem now fixed thanks to the above posts from LOR, thanks Mr Rings. But what about my first question, does some one (for the first ever time) uploading from me, slow down my downloads or even my computer? Once again Many thanks

That depend upon what type of connection you have! If you have dial-up modem then yes it does affect it. If DSL I 'think' it might affect it. But if cable, adsl, etc. then in most cases the answer is no.

If you are running as an Ultrapeer then you may get varying & unpredictable results. That's b/c people are going thru you help them connect to the network. It can use up a lot of your upld bandwidth. Being a UP could potentially slow your comp. UP can be disabled if prefered by going to Tools>Options>Speed & ticking Disable UP Capabilities & pressing the Apply button.

Also, do you use a usb modem? USB modems generally utilise the poser from your comp & also utilise your comp's processor. This may result in inconsistent results on both sides of the fence (your comp slowing & your connection not being consistent.)

Also don't use the Resume/Find Sources button on many files. Otherwise this will result in most of your files queueing for much, much longer than normal, & possibly affect LW's connection quality, & slow down both LW & your system by forcing them to use moe resources than normal.

Some hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

Make sure your Java is up to date: Java 1.5 (take the JRE)
