1. Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! 2. After opening LW wait 10 to 20 mins before using. Let it settle down 1st. 3. Set both uplds & downlds to autoclear. Close all LW windows you don't need open at that time. If you're not in front of your comp, then hide LW in the dock. Reduce uplds to about 70-80% or more. Reduce downlds to 80 or 90%. 4. Also don't use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time. 5. A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...028#post116028 |

hey again, tried those suggestions, and it limewire ran perfectly until i tried to search anything. i clicked search and after a few results had come up (about 10 seconds or so) my computer froze again. any other suggestions? could it be related to norton internet security somehow? im not great with computers, but can do some stuff, as long as its not too full on like bios stuff and that. anything in windows is fine. any ideas? cheers, kyle |

Did you configure your NIS for LW: Configuring Norton Internet Security I have heard uninstalling NIS & reinstalling it can sometimes fix a problem with misbehaviour. Here's some xtra questions just in case that doesn't fix it. Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. Who is your isp provider? 10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. |

ok here goes. 1. OS version? Windows XP SP2 2. What firewalls you have? Windonws XP and Norton Internet Security 2004 Firewall 3. ram? 512kb 4. Hard Disk space available? approx 85gb 5. Connection type? dial up 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? not sure 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? home 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.8.1 Pro, java 1.5.0_02 9. Who is your isp provider? telstra big pond (australia) 10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 1st try i configured NIS how it says on that link, and im not sure if its worked or not yet. so far so good, but i got 4 security alerts when i first started LW. they were all "high risk: a remote system is attempting to access your computer" i have spybot, peer guardian and ad-aware as well as NIS, so i think i'm ok on that front. ive included some details norton gave me on the blocked 'intrusion attempts'. #1 Remote address is (24.155.26.208) Message type is "Destination Unreachable" Process name is "N/A" #2 The user has created a rule to "block" communications Inbound ICMP request Local address ({{my stuff was here}})) Remote address is (24.150.80.78) Message type is "Destination Unreachable" Process name is "N/A" the other 2 were pretty much the same. any new ideas? cheers for the help by the way, much appreciated. regards, kyle sydney, australia |

Disable your XP firewall. You don't need 2 active firewalls & I remember reading (I think it was Norton) who recommended not having 2 firewalls b/c they may interfere with each other. De-activate your LW media player. It only makes LW work harder. Go to Tools>Options>Player & untick option & press Apply. But in order to make your default audio player active for launching from LW you'll need to re-open LW. If you don't have a decent default audio player then I'd recommend either iTunes, or QCD, etc. I'll see if another member recognises those NIS alerts. I've heard NIS picks them up from time to time. If still problems I wonder if you should step backwards to an earlier Java version. ie: uninstall Java 1.5 using Add/Remove Programs control panel. Then downld Java 1.4.2 to your computer (don't install over the net!) & then install it. See link here: Fixes for Limewire Last edited by Lord of the Rings; April 20th, 2005 at 09:02 AM. |

ok. LW has been running for a while, i've searched, downloaded etc and so far so good. it ran well last night but i didnt really get a chance to try it out for too long. i'll be sure to post my results from tonight. here's what i changed. -turned off LW media player. -added port 6346 (i think that was it- the one limewire uses) to the "ports to monitor" in NIS>options>firewall. i didnt change the windows firewall or java yet because itw working well so far. if i have problems thats gonna be my next change. i still get the security alerts, but only 2 at first when i connect then no more, which i can put up with. thanks for the help, kyle |

hey guys, thanks for the help fabion, ive already done that though. my computer has locked up since my last post, so now i've turned off windows firewall and it seems better. maybe this time itll work. once i did what i said in my last post lw ran much better, so im slowly making progress. after turning off windows firewall, i seem to get heaps of messages about blocked intrusion attempts, but these ones are red instead of yellow. it tells me norton has blocked an intrusion attempt. i think this is only happening because norton is blocking them instead of windows firewall. LW is running really well so far. dont wanna jinx myself though. see ya guys, kyle |
