Nothing happens when I click on ADD folder for sharing

Hi there,

I'm a new user to Limewire and i'm hoping that some kind peep could help me out. I've tried using the search button, but can't find anyone with the same problem as mine

I have no problems connecting...

My problem is sharing, i've got a wealth of files to share,
but when I click on Tools-Options-Sharing-Add, nothing happens, no scanning of my computer nothing
The same if I click Library-File-Add folder to share, zilch.

I'm using WinXP, I've downloaded Limewire version4.8.1 and Java
version 5. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me

You yourself need to direct LW where to find the files ... even type in the location if necessary. It won't search the media files for you. So use the Look in: part & select the location of your folder(s) you wish to share.

Steppers April 22nd, 2005 09:19 PM

Thanks for your quick reply LOTR

However, sorry to sound dumb, but where is this "look in" part??

Oh boy, I hate being the dumb newbie...

Please don't write me off just yet, but how did you get to that selected directory screenshot?

You know when i'm in Options-Tools-Sharing, there is only the button ADD for me to click on, or underneath there is a thing l about shared extensions

One other thing, might be important but when I'm in Options-Tools-Saving page and I click on browse to save files to a new folder nothing happens there either..

Thanks for your patience

Lord of the Rings April 22nd, 2005 09:48 PM

I got the above from going to Library File>Add Folder to Share. Then pressed the "Find in:" location.

Your problem sounds odd. I wonder if you have a Java problem. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.

Perhaps you should Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire But make a note of your settings 1st b/c you'll need to reset them. Also update your Java to 1.5

Steppers April 22nd, 2005 10:12 PM

That''s what I mean, even when I go to Library File-Add folder, that's when nothing happens, it doesn't give me the option to browse and select my folders :( (Definitely weird)

I'm using Limewire 4.8.1 and Java 1.5.0_02

Thanks for the link, i'm going to give it a go...

Steppers April 22nd, 2005 10:16 PM

Hmmm, just one more thing before I delete the .limewire folder, what settings do I need to make a note of?

Just want to get things right...
It looks like it's a good program, better than Winmx, Bearshare and Ares that i've tried in the past (if only I could get it to work) :(

Lord of the Rings April 22nd, 2005 10:27 PM

I notice you state you're from Thailand. Do you speak Thai? Do you have LW set to Thai?

Settings to remember or note: upld & downld settings, any filters you've applied, saving location unless you used the default location. Any shared folders other than Shared*.

Is the drive you are using with LW on an internal or external drive? Are you saving to C drive or another?

Steppers April 22nd, 2005 10:39 PM

Oh ok so seeing as i've never used Limewire before then there's nothing really for me to make a note of.

I'm a 31 year old lass from the UK but i've been living here in Thailand for almost 6 years now. I can speak Thai (just so I know if any of the locals are talking about the crazy white girl) but all my settings for LW are in English.

I'm using LW on my laptop and i've only got the one drive, although I haven't even started downloaded anything yet, becasue of my sharing problem.

Hey LOTR if you fancy a holiday in Thailand, you're welcome to come and stay at my place, just so long as you sort me problems out
:D

Lord of the Rings April 22nd, 2005 10:52 PM

Sounds like a great offer thank you! :D

I learnt Kme not Thai but will be studying Thai 2nd half of year.

OK my suggestion is to find the exact location of your folders you wish to share & type it into the bottom option of the Add to share window.

eg: C:\Documents and Settings\Lotr\My Documents\My Music

Steppers April 22nd, 2005 11:10 PM

What's Kme, is that like Cambodian or Burmese?
How comes you're learning Kme and Thai?

Right well, I deleted my .limewire and same old same old.

Also there is no bottom option on my Add to share window. It's like they're dead links...I can't believe that noone else has had this problem. I also tied copying and pasting my files into the default saving folder, all the files are in there Limewire can't see them so still shows me as 0 file sharing

To be honest with you, I think I'll just have to give up here, looks like that me and Limewire just aren't going to happen.

but hey, thanks again though for all your help

Where it says File Name in the above image you type in the folder address such as the example given. Then press the Select button.

Kmer is Cambodian language, has some similarities to Thai. I was very interested in Asian culture & language.

Another example is to type in C:\Documents and Settings\"your account name"\Shared which is your downld folder by default.

Did you get your LW from here? http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

I'm thinking there's something wrong with your installation. Go to Start menu>Programs>Limewire>uninstaller. And uninstall. Then downld LW again but save it to your computer, don't install over the net. Same applies to Java. Perhaps if you downld Java to your computer after uninstalling Java, then re-install it. Find Java here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp (take the JRE)

I think if you re-install both Java & LW from your computer (not over the net), then the problems will go away (fingers crossed.) Something's definitely not right! Needs at least another go at least! ;) :)

Steppers April 24th, 2005 01:23 AM

Hey there, how's you?

Well, i've just unistalled both LW and Java and I followed the links and downloaded them to my computer first , but alas nothings changed :(

I can't believe that no ones had this problem before...well, that's it I suppose.

Best of luck with you're studying and if you ever find yourself jetting to this side of the world, send us a message and I'll buy you a beer/coke/coffee :D

Thanks for the invite. Your problem has got me stumped. I would like to think you won't give up just yet. I hope to attract the attention of other members to see if we can sort out your problem which is a very odd one. I've never heard of this problem before.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. What firewalls you have?
2. ram?
3. Hard Disk space available?
4. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
6. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
8. Who is your isp provider?

Steppers April 24th, 2005 04:32 AM

Ok so you've found one of my weaknesses...I give up too easily.
But I really would love to use Limewire, there's only so many Thai Soap Operas a sane person can take :D

I'm going to try and attempt to answer the following questions, but i'm really not all that on computer jargon...

1. What firewalls you have?

Sygate, and I configured it to allow Java and LW

2. ram?

256 MB

3. Hard Disk space available?

7 Gigabytes

4. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)

Broadband

5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?

Zyxel Prestige 630

6. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?

Home. Im using my laptop, Compaq Presario X1000, running on WinXP

7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.

LW 4.8.1 Java 1.5.0_02

8. Who is your isp provider?

Hmm...as in who do I pay my bills to right? Well, that's a company called True...actrually on second thoughts you probably don't need to know that.

Checked in my network connections, WAN Miniport (PPPOE) is that any use to you?

I'm not sure what a router is, sorry...

Hopefully, we'll be able to get this problem sorted out.
Cheers again
Steppers

Forgot to mention i'm also using WinXP SP2, if that makes any difference.

et voilà April 24th, 2005 05:42 AM

Salut du Québec Steppers! I will ask you something to try that might help your situation:

First try to change the theme in LW to the limewire theme. Menu Display -> Apply theme -> Limewire theme. Try to add a share in options.

If that doesn't work:
-uninstall java 1.5 while LW is shut down
-install java 1.4 instead : http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (download the JRE)
-start LW and tell us if the buttons work

I tell you that because java 1.5 on XP uses the default XP appearance. Java 1.4, on the other end, uses by default the limewire theme (different innner working). The appearance should be different for your LW, but that might help you to finally activate buttons.

Ciao ;)

Steppers April 24th, 2005 06:01 AM

Hello et Voil,

Sorry, but I've looked and looked on my LW screen and I can't for the life of me find anything to do with themes. Too be honest with you, I can't even find this Menu display button

Could you point me in the right direction, please?
Thanks
Steppers

et voilà April 24th, 2005 06:05 AM

In menu there should be File, Display, Navigation, Ressources, Tools, Help. You select Display or the second menu (my menu is in french so maybe my translations are off a little bit).

Steppers April 24th, 2005 06:07 AM

Sorry, bear with me, think i've found it

et voilà April 24th, 2005 06:12 AM

I just checked in english and it is the view (not display) menu next to the file menu (you select apply skins in the view menu). If you can't see that, follow my advice with java 1.4 and 1.5.

Ciao

Steppers April 24th, 2005 06:18 AM

Oh My God.....

You're the MAN, you are a GENIUS!!!

Thank you so much that seems to have done the trick. Now when I click on the Add button, it opens up that select directory window, so that I can choose the folders to be shared.

I can't believe it and I was this close to giving up.

Thanks to LOTR as well, because without him, I would have thrown my laptop through my window a long time ago

Steppers

:D ;) :p

et voilà April 24th, 2005 06:22 AM

Excellent, but yes, thank LODR because he referred the thread to me, without him, I wouldn't have responded ;)

Ciao
