I've been going OK with LimeWire; I've downloaded a fair amount fine. It's just that all of a sudden I'm getting all these 'Corrupt' files, and 23-minute long songs of just silence. Any idea how to...fix them? avoid getting them? Etc.

I have the same problem.. never any problems before today.

See T3 Spammers; mp3 Bit-Rates Versus File Sizes & you'll notice this only happens with the most recent & popular songs.

You could also try these: mp3 fixers: video-fixer (also fixes mp3's) A (click on link)

But no guarantees they'll work for your files.

I have heard that the recording industry is behind this corruption of files and long files of silence in an attempt to force p2p users to give up trying to download files and buy them instead because all they end up getting with the newer top songs is all corrupted downloads. This happened a while ago with kazzaa networks and now they must be moving onto the other p2p file sharing networks now also.
