![]() how do you connect to more than 6 users when downloading. my limewire only connects to 6 users/sources max when i dl. this happens when there are 100+ users i could dl from but i only connect to 6. how can i change this. i'm on 256k adsl, and i'm sure if i connect to more sources i will dl faster. at the moment i only dl at about 5KBs with 6 sources. i shoud be able to dl at about 25-32KBs, more than 5 anyway. i'm having issues with my router at the moment but i'm sure if i dl from more sources it should dl faster. is there a way to dl from more than 6 sources? please help. |

![]() It all depends on who's online at the time of downloading. You can have a thousand sources but if 6 only showup, that means there is only 6 users on at the time that are sharing. That just means that over a thousand users have downloaded said file, which, 9 times out of time means, they are also not sharing it. if more users opened up and shared you have more than 6 sources to choose from. but if it's your connection speed that could mean that's as high as you can go for sources. what do you have it set on? Check your settings to change it. You sound like you have your settings set at default. you should be able to change that in your Limewire settings under downloads. ![]() Last edited by Sphinx; August 10th, 2005 at 09:09 AM. |

![]() Maorifulla My answer is purely based on my own observations and, like Sphinx said, the number of people you can download from is dependant on the number of people on-line and sharing that particular file. It is also dependants on the quality and speed of yours as well as the sharers internet connections. Remember that the P2P community is scattered all over the world and internet connection quality can vary quite a lot within a small area, within a country, as well as world wide. So the number of people you can download has other factors that are not readily obvious. When I am using LW, sometimes only one source is found but when I try to download from it, mysteriously, another 5 – 10 sources appear to download from. At other times, there could be as much as 20 – 30 sources appear for a file but I can only download from one source. The LW software tries to smooth out these peaks, troughs and various anomalies in the P2P system and bearing in mind what it has to deal with, i.e. thousands of individual PCs, various connections, quality, speed, even some corrupt files, etc., I think it does a pretty good job. ![]() Limewire & Bearshare seem to go by multiple sources. Meaning, the sources are there but not everyone opens up to allow other users to download. but if the source number keeps saying 6 for you, it's always a good idea to double check your setting. not so much your bandwidth, but the sources you are accepting from. How many sources do you have your Limewire set on? Again, sounds like you have yours set on default. go higher. it doesnt matter if you set your bandwidth to a hundred percent, you can only download as fast as the user you are downloading from. hope this helps? edited to add: Keep in mind too that you are downloading off the gnutella (sp?) network not Limewire network, LW is just the app that allows you to connect. You have to find hosts or sources to download off of. Not sure what versions you guys use though. This is the same for all P2P apps whether it's Pro or free. If the host isn't online to allow you to download off of then, you'll have to try to find more sources who are online at the sametime you are. Last edited by Sphinx; August 11th, 2005 at 07:33 AM. |

![]() As of 4.9, LW downloads 8 sources concurrently in basic versions for DSL/Cable connections, changing from 6 in previous versions. Increasing the numbers of concurrent sources for downloads is not something really desired as it would totally fill the upload queue of sharers. This means less download availability for others and a decrease in average download speed per 1 source of download, since the source would split more its upload bandwidth to satisfy downloaders. Also add that more connections means more overhead (ie waste of bandwidth not used either for dl or upload to manage connections) and you begin to see the picture here. Or I would hope that you see that picture... Ciao ![]()

![]() Why should be stuck with the basic sources? if the hosts are not on at the sametime then how do you expect users to download if they can't raise their own sources higher? that doesnt make sense. Im on a P2P app to download not to struggle. if users raised their sources a bit it won't hurt the network any. (Maybe you should remind the freeloaders then to open up and share then we wouldn't have to be stuck with the basic sources. mho) ![]() |
