New here! Downloading ?% Software

I'm new to Lime Wire, and I tried to download &*?*&?, every file I saw, and I'm getting a virus detection?

My Norton opens up as soon as it's finished and says a virus has been detected, delete the file? And then in Lime Wire a window pops up and says this file is corrupted?

It says Norton Anti Virus has detected and removed a virus from you computer, setup.exe w32.Alcra.C (container) &?%?*&.zip ... and then when I close that window it says that the file you have downloaded is corrupted? Any help here.

This isn't a good FIRST EXPERIENCE!

When you download any file, always check the size of the file. Software is usually very large, if the file doesnt look right to you then avoid it. You download off other people at your own risk. Gnutella is an open network. The only thing to go by is how large a file is, if it's really small then it is most likely a virus and there's nothing Limewire cant do anything about users sticking viruses in the P2P network. ;)

mslilly August 22nd, 2005 05:29 PM

They are large files!

All these files are the same kb - the ones that are smaller I avoid. Everyone of them say 851.7 kb (only one I found is 972.7 kb)

I don't understand how every .zip file could be corrupted? That seems weird to me. I haven't found any that'll work yet so far. I downloaded a music file, and that worked fine...?

that is a well known virus. avoid it. Like I said, software is very, very large in size, usually in the hundreds range in megs. Music to download should be fine.

when you search for software, type in just the name and see what the top results are in the sources. again, if it doesnt look right to you, then usually, that means it's a virus. ;)

Microsoft software is ten times larger than that.

nikki517008 August 22nd, 2005 10:25 PM

I heard you can block hosts, also, if there's one person who's particularly giving you trouble. There's someone in my area who constantly gives out these 106.8 KB files, and I think they're either ads or viruses. The strange thing is that no matter what I enter in the search section, there are always 106.8 KB files popping up with the exact same name. I'm starting to wonder if someone has a program that changes the title of their files (or ads, or viruses, etc.) to whatever someone is searching for. Do you know if such a program exists?

mslilly August 23rd, 2005 01:49 PM

I'm not sure ... but ...

I am a member of another program, and I've downloaded many songs and never ever had these type error messages ... "currupt files"...

That was the ONLY reason I downloaded this program was for the software, and I haven't had any luck at all since 3 nights ago.

And on the other program I'm using, there is NO PORN .. and you don't have to adjust any options or preferences!! I'm really happy with it.

However, this program has been a disappointment.

I appreciate your response!

Lord of the Rings August 23rd, 2005 01:58 PM

Please see this WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! & following the recommendations & remember the points made about file sizes, etc. ;) Sorry to hear of your experience. But it is a fact of life on the internet.

Check Downld/Upld Problems Sticky for more important points you should know about. (Click on both underlined links!) ;) :p

mslilly August 23rd, 2005 02:45 PM

Yes agreeing!

Absolutely ... a fact of life on the internet for sure ... but I have to say, I have been pretty lucky, not to many viruses get emailed to me, or downloaded into my pc.

I have downloaded two programs I share p2p with, and never have downloaded any files with viruses, and I have tons of MUSIC!! Of course it's Christian music, maybe that's why?

And I kept looking for the software (cant say here I guess what it is), and took your advice of the file has to be much larger? I did find one, and it took over 1 hr to download, so I thought I was making progress, but when the file opened - it wasn't the program at all? I have no idea what it was? Haha!

And thank goodness for virus protection! :)

Thanks for your help!

Michelle

nikki517008 August 23rd, 2005 02:57 PM

I'm wondering, Michelle, which program did you use other than Limewire that you were satisfied with? A friend suggested Ares to me but then I tried it and I was even less satisfied with that. Do you find that the other program is faster or cleaner or more convenient? Although complications are internet's facts of life, it's always good when you find a program that bypasses many of these problems.

arne_bab August 23rd, 2005 04:24 PM

@mslilly: Since I know of no reason, why you should have these problems only with LW (except, that you might have been cursed by the great limette god), might you please tell us, what program you where so satisfied with (except if is te iTunes Music Store).

Besides: There's a ton of great pagan music out there, which you might want to check out :)

mslilly August 24th, 2005 07:23 PM

I'm not really sure what arne_bab

Meant by his post - "limette god"? If you are speaking of my God, the G is CAPITALIZED! :) Haha. ;)

Well, I wasn't sure if I was allowed to say where I download my music, so I didn't post....but since you all ask, the website is here ...
http://www.360share.cn ---- and it's truly awesome. VERY FAST, I was very surprised when I signed up how quick the music downloads, and how fast it found the songs/artists I was looking for. I found this link off of a Christian music countdown site ... and again, was very happy with how it worked. I've used the other one acres? I think that's the name, and well, it doesn't even compare to this one. I was amazed at how it found NEW songs ... I love it! It isn't free though, I think I paid like $22 forever!! If you order it, just be careful and read the places to check, cause they'll add $9.95 for some sorta extra stuff, and well I wasn't paying attention, and they charged me for it, however, when I called them, they said it's ok, and they removed that fee! It's not just Christian music either .. it's everything!

The other program I have in my pc is winmix - I downloaded that ages ago when it was free, and still can find music on it... but the 360share is tremondously better than this even. Never ever downloaded corrupt files!

Hope this helps!!

And arne_bab - thanks but no thanks, I'll stick to my Christian music!! Have you ever listened to it lately? It's truly not boring! :) Contemporary Christian is very good music!!

Thanks you guys!!

;)

Sorry...

I posted a reply to this thread on a new post. Errr...sorry. LOL

See post above!

Lord of the Rings August 24th, 2005 07:26 PM

360Share is a scam clone version of LW. You can find it on the list here: Known Scam Sites

Dagam3 August 24th, 2005 08:00 PM

Wow wow wow.........
:D :D :D

ultracross August 24th, 2005 09:43 PM

@ mslilly

you are recieving a corruption message because norton is disabling access to this virus file. limewire thinks that the file is currupt because it cannot/is not allowed to read/write to it. hence, the corruption message. that shouldnt have been too hard to figure out guys ;)

btw mslilly, im lobbying at limewire to add the christian/christian rock genre's to the genre search :)

[edit]
my personal favorite christian rock bands include but not limited to: jars of clay, audio adrenaline and relient k.
[/edit]

arne_bab August 25th, 2005 06:24 AM

If you add christian, than please add pagan and jewish and similar.

It's all one breed.

The only difference is, maybe, the great Murphy ;)

ukbobboy01 August 25th, 2005 09:03 AM

Well arne_bab

I don't know about the great MURPHY  but I do know about Murphy's Law (also known as Sod's Law), which states:

Whatever can go wrong will go wrong:eek:.

Plain, simple and always true:D.

UK Bob

Remember the subject of the threat...

Hey arne_bab why are you so mad... I'm NOT trying here to defend mslilly but I thought that this is one of the Download/Upload Problems threads. So it seems to me that your post it's way far from the real subject...

;) :D :D ;)

arne_bab August 25th, 2005 12:03 PM

@dagam3: You're right, I'm a bit off...

But not really mad, just hae a bit free time and fun at writing :)

Thanks for reminding me of the topic! (was necessary  )

mslilly August 25th, 2005 08:23 PM

Haha...you guys are to funny!!

Oh wow, Ultracross!! WAY COOL! ;) I love Jars of Clay!! :) How bout Third Day???? :)

Sorry, I'm am off the subject here, but I get emails when you guys post to my original message.

Thanks Dagam3 ... haha, the statement "whatever can go wrong will go wrong" SO TRUE. But I don't let that bother me any! :) Well, I try not to!!

And well, I didn't know about the "known scam sites" ... the icon on my desk top is actually getanysong from 360shares? And well, it's worked for me, and they were nothing but pleasant. Maybe it was my Norton that caused the error messages? But it only did it on software, the music downloaded fine...it was just a lot of junk that showed up ... porn.... and such, I HATE PORN!

Oh and arne_bab, I really really do not want to get off the subject here either ... however, I do have to say this ... and I do NOT WANT TO EVEN GO INTO PREACHING HERE ON THIS BOARD ...hahaha, but it's here on my heart, and I'll hand it to you to think about, SCRIPTURE says: Romans 14:11 - for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God." God gives everyone a will - choice ... God says you may believe what you will ... however, AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE ... (LOL so the song says) I believe in God, Heaven and Hell, and my soul is definitely not going to HELL. ;) Give God a chance. You might like it! :) He'll truly let you know who he is ... my life has been truly blessed for sure! Want to read more - I have some fantastic LINKS! :)

Sorry everyone. Really I am. LOL ... I really have enjoyed reading all the post ... everyone has been very helpful and kind to me!! LOL

BTW, I did call the place where I downloaded this program, since the email was returned where to respond to for refunds, and well, some guy answered? I plainly asked him IS THIS A SCAM? LOL .. HE SAID NO, he'd refund my money in 5-7 days... haha...ok, I'm not holding my breath here. :) LOL

arne_bab August 25th, 2005 08:53 PM

@mslilly: Tell me, if you get your money back.

Besides: Did you get the source-code?

Could you do me the favour to ask the supporters, where you can get the source-code of 360share?

You know, if you dl Microsoft softwear you are just asking for a virus. You're better off buying it. The only other P2P program I use is Bearshare Lite. I just dl old music with it. You can always tell a virus by the size of the file. and lately, Gnutella is flooded with them. I miss the good old days of P2P.

arne_bab August 26th, 2005 02:49 PM

There is a free LimeWire mod, which intend to remove that problem.

Try searching for "Credence LimeWire" in Google to find it.

arne_bab August 28th, 2005 07:10 PM

Here's your link to it.
