newbie question

Hi Can anyone tell me why some locations are in red and some in black in the location tab in search?

Also how can I tell if the person i'm dl from is on or off line

Thanks

Im not sure what you mean by red or black? what version of Limewire are you using? If the downloads start from the host then that should mean the host is active and online.

red means they are firewalled, and thus are less reliable (involves more steps to make the transfer work).

You can't reliably tell if they are offline, since they may be busy and "seem" offline when you try. I'm not sure how often search results are updated, but I gather it's pretty quick.

I got an older version so mine doesnt come up as red or black. ;)

Isnt there a way to preview hosts to see which ones? I thought there used to be a setting for that?

Hmm--the red/black locations have been around for quite a while.

However, the location column is off by default.

Here's a shot of a "what's new" Image search:

Shinx, I am intrigued to know what application you are referring to in some of your posts, I remember querying one of your statements and you said "whops ... wrong ap" I'm just curious:cool:

Personally I never take any notice of the red or black locations. I'd d/l ftom a red modem any day over a black T3!

I had no idea why some of the IP numbers were red until I read this thread. Hobo, what do you have against T3's? I personally, prefer to download from T1's but I've never really had any problems with T3's.

Hi CS I downloaded a queue of stuff the other day from a T3. no problem ... not very fast but the files were good and I was a happy hobo.

That is my ONLY good experience with a T3. I find they usually send you iPod adverts or corrupt files, or simply do nothing atall ... just sit on a speed of O and eventually leave you needing more sourses.( and those are just the ones that don't look as if the're sharing viruses) I just don't bother anymore.

I've just never paid attention to it. I use Bearshare Lite more than Limewire these days. I didnt upgrade to this new version. I get more dl results with Bearshare than I do in LW. I really, really have not bothered to look at the IP's in LW. I just click to download.

shrug.

Thanks for the help guys. I only asked as I have used soulseek in the past and it was easy to know who was and wasn't on line etc. Still this is a good prog and relatively easy to use
