slow downloads

To: Grandpa,

I too have speed issues.
Grandpa asked for info..here is mine!

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (XP Pro)
2. What firewalls you have? (Zone Alarm)
3. How much ram? (512Mb)
4. Hard Disk space available? (12 Gb)
5. Connection type? (cable)
6. Modem (TeraPro TCM200)
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home)
8. Limewire (4.9.30) & Java (1.5.0_03)
9. Who is your ISP provider? (Vianet / Shaw Cable)
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers (No)
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'.(Yes) What happens when you go there?(nothing)
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

* Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. (Yes)http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

12. Do This test, Is the result True/False?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showt...3757#post103757 Is the result True/False (True)

13. Do a speed test post the results here.

Seatle..... download 163.3 KB/s upload 45.8 KB/s (1306 kbps 430kbps)
Chicago... download 203.5 KB/s upload 53.9KB/s (1628kbps 431kbps)
all this while downloading a file at 16KB/s on limewire pro.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Why can I only get a burst of 55KB/s and a sustained rate of 23KB/s when I can download regular files at 290 KB/s all day long.
I went from regular limewire to limewire pro for the turbo download feature....this did not happen, in fact my download speed diminished to the mid twenty's...so far this program does not meet any of my expectations....tooooooooo slow, it is almost painful!

I want you to try something do a search of a popular files say 2000kb to 4000kb in size click on say 10 or so in a row simultaneously Download them and see what your speed is it should go to your max dl capabilities. Let us know the results.

Download test

Thankyou for your timely responce and you help!

I downloaded 9 mp3 files at approx 5 Mb each as you requested.

Average 45KB/s Peak 60KB/s
(as displayed in tools menu <stats>)

Is this an expected rate?

What is an approximate average one should expect?

Thanks again.

That is below what I expected. My connection is cable 700Kb/s Down and 45Kb/s Up. When I do the test I start the first 15 or so files the most popular with the most sources. I will get sustained DL of 600+Kb/s with peak above my max 750Kb/s. I use 4.9.30 Pro.

I need to know how you have LW set up. The answers can be found under the tools/options in limewire

#1 Speed What do you have the speed set at.

#2 Downloads What is the max DL set at and Bandwidth setting

#3 Uploads/Basic What is Bandwidth set at. (Slots) # max UL per person. # Max UL slots.

#4 Searching/Basic # max searches. (Quality) what you have it set at. (Speed) what you have it set at.

#6 Advanced/Firewall Listening port #, Router configuration what you have it set at.

lw pro settings

#1 Speed = T1

#2 Downloads Max =10
Speed =123.75KB/s

#3 Upload Basic Speed =123.75
Max =3/person
Slots = 8

#4Search Basic Max = 5
Quality = 3 & 4 stars
Speed = Cable / DSL or greater

#6 Firewall Port = 6788 (these are the default settings)
Config = UPnP

Just a note: I am newbie to this, please be patient. When I downloaded Limewire Pro I did not provide the authentication code as it was activated when I clicked on the download link. Was I suppost to activate it during some install process, and this is why I do not have the speed? Should I re-install?

Grandpa September 25th, 2005 03:25 PM

Gofer

There is no authentication for Pro I want you to change your setting to the settings below. You may need to change you listing port to 6346 but I do not know that yet so don't change it until I tell you to.

#1 Speed = Cable

#2 Downloads Max =10
Speed =Unlimited

#3 Upload Basic Speed =30
Max =3/person
Slots = 4 or 5

#search Basic Max = 50
Quality = Show All
Speed = Show All

#6 Firewall Port = 6788 (these are the default settings)
Config = UPnP
