Default New & Don't understand?

Hi, I am new to downloading and I don’t understand what things mean? Can anyone give me a simple explanation please (I am female and blonde) I have downloaded a 340mb file and it took 10 hours? I have a broadband modem speed 1mb so thought I should have been able to download a bit faster then the 2 to 7 kb’s - 7kb's is the fastest speed I have seen so far.
Any help please?

Downld speeds generally depend upon your sources & what speeds they have available for uplding. See the following link & follow “ALL” the off-shoot links to find hints & extra skills to help solve your problem: To continue files downlding (click on link)

Keep in mind just because you have a fast connection doesn't mean the people who have the file have fast uplds or if they are sharing with many upld slots then their available speeds will be limited. Also some Gnutella clients such as Sharaza (RAZA) who often have the videos, are multinetwork programs & use most of their bandwidth for the other networks & not Gnutella network. Also your true downld speed can be obtained by doing a speed test. Speeds by isp's are quoted in bits per second & not Bytes/second as LW does. Subtract about 20% overhead losses from your 1 MB connection & divide by 8 will give an idea of what speed in KB/s you should get. You can choose a speed test from here: http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/

Thanks for that - I have visited those sites now and read most of the bumff - my problem is I really am not up on this and I dont know the difference between the differnet sorts of files i.e when I want to down load a video clip what would it be best to download a avi file or a mgp file ? should I use only a cable dsl or T1 T3 or Higher ? If any of you can give a thicko the meaning of these and how I should download so I don't just add more traffic to the system - I have been to the lime wire site and read all the help pages - even printed them off. It is so over my head, all I would like to do is download a few video and music files reasonably quickly, would be pleased with a speed of 10 to 20 kb's
I would be gratful for any help please.

For videos, here's some tips:
1. Movie download issues

2. Influx of Porn recently being Spammed on Network - How to Stop it returning in your search results

3. Learn to use Bitzi lookup: How to use Bitzi Web Lookup ...

File format is matter of choice I guess. Either one, but if you intend to burn them then make sure your burner can handle divx files (if it's an avi.) There's many different types of avi, but most popular nowadays is divx because it uses the mpeg4 encoding & thus can save at smaller sizes. Those files you see that have an mpg/mpeg extension will be either mpeg 1 or 2.

Your speed setting is what's closest to the speed you have, also what suits both your upld & downld speeds if you need to control the bandwidth so you can browse at the same time. What speeds are T1/T3, etc. for LW, & also More on LW connection speeds
