Unhappy Need Help with DL speed.....ya sorry....

Hi All,

I'm kinda new here, so first off hello to you all!! I have read a ton of stuff on how to speed my Limewire DL's up and have had absolutely no success......I have only ever been able to DL at ~1-6kb, if any at all. Anyway im at my wits end.... I don't think my ISP is blocking anything....just wondering if you could help me.....thanks a bunch in advance...

-Im running win 98 on a P3 at 500mhz

-I have norton AntiVirus Firewall....Permit all is on for Limewire. But the Icon on the bottom always shows that i have a firewall on, i also get the warning that says i have a firewall. I do not understand this and suspect this might be a possible cause of my issues????

-I have 196mb of RAM

-have 80GB of hard disk space....on a firelite external USB hard drive which i DL my files onto.

-I have a Cable Modem

-I have no router, Modem is a Motorola SB5100, oh and i use a talkbroadband gatewayby D-Link DVG-1120. But even before i had this i had the exact same issues. Modem is hooked up via Ethernet.

-Im connecting from Home

-Limewire 4.9.37 and Java 1.5.0_01

-My ISP is Source Cable in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada....also known as Quickclic.

-I do not share my computer with any others. I have Bearshare but do not use it, it runs the same (1-3kb) as Limewire anyway.

-I have used Limewire before, but i had a DSL connection with Bell Canada, and never had a problem with speed. My problems began when i switched to Cable at my new house.

-The test for port 6346 = "Your Test Worked" I always get this when i try this test!! works fine!!

-My bug report is False.

Thanks a ton for your help now and in the past guys as i have always had some hope at least and occasionally was able to help myself by reading all your articles.

WEIRD...... I just uninstalled my Norton and Limewire and reinstalled my Limewire without the Anti virus, and the firewall icon still saying that "limewire has detected a firewall."

Also my DL's off the net are ~180KB on average, but Limewire isn't so kind, Only 1-3KB with 8 hosts!!!

Also I was trying different port numbers, after i saw a post I tried some and was able to DL much faster ~50KB....beggars can't be choosers!!! But I did not bookmark the post, and only remembered 2 of the 12 or so.....ie..port 1111, 3500, thats all i remember......so if anyone can direct back to where i found thses that would be freakin sweet.....

Thanks in advance all,

Scotty

Port 80 is sometimes used. I think that's the one you're refering to. Yep LW 4.9 is certainly super-sensitive to firewalls. 4.8 was never like that. Before I read the last paragraph I was going to suggest perhaps your new isp is filtering your speeds (yes some do this) since you had same problems with Bearshare. Here's an example of how a p2p bandwidth shaper can work: Bandwidth Shaper Sample - typical of how some ISP's use it (click on link) ie: giving priority to net surfing & low priorities to p2p sharing on Gnutella.

If port 80 works fine for you then that's great. I think port 80 is reserved for web servers. Anyway here's some more ports just in case: 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 8360, 10000, 15189, 80, 19515, 20282, 22817, 443, 34599, 40475, 42628.

I personally believe the super-sensitivity toward firewalls is a bug. It was much worse with the earlier 4.9.x versions but they fixed it (sort of.) lol

And these tips never go astray if you're interested: See the following link & follow “ALL” the off-shoot links to find hints & extra skills to help solve your problem: To continue files downlding (click on link)

Default thanks

YEEEEE HAWWWWW.........Thanks a ton LOTR, i had a ton of success with trying a few different port numbers......8360 seems to be the magic number....I was DL over 100 KB/ Im so stoked that my LW is workn like it should.

So is it safe to say my ISP was blocking certain ports....is that right>???? not a computer guy but i know my way around a bit.

LW still has that firewall icon enabled, so i just removed it, so it doesn't bother me!! Is it safe to say that this port should work fine for awhile, or do i have to keep switchn them up???

Thanks again dude,

Scotty
