operating systems The last time that I had limewire installed into my computer. I lost my operating system...someone stole it off of my computer. I am a little worried about installing Limewire again. I don't know if people can take my operating system off of the computer with Limewire via sharing files. Please help in this as I am seriously missing my music:) I am not saying that it is where my operating system was stolen from (a user of Limewire) I just am wondering if it is possible off of Limewire. Thank you Jessie |
Stole your operating system? How can that be? What makes you think somemone stole it? I hope you weren't sharing your entire computer thru LW. |
I am not sure how it happened?! I was only sharing music that was in the one file. But, can someone come through my back door of my computer through limewire and take the operating system...? I don't know alot about computers. thank you for replying so quickly |
There's no backdoor abilities with LW. There are with spy programs, etc. Make sure your firewall & AV programs are active. Also get these protective programs: 1. ad-ware (FREE), & also 2. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) Another worth considering is Peerguardian: http://phoenixlabs.org/ Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) I'm still confused as to what makes you think someone stole your OS.??? |
Wow you are fast....i thank you very much again. Uh....my dad told me that is why windows wanted me to activate my computer even though i had already done so when i first got it. He said that the operating system was going. And that someone must of "downloaded" it into their computer. Jess |
No I don't think so. Just keep your system well protected with the utilities I suggested & you should be fine. Yes windows does want you to contact them for registration purposes, etc. Remember to keep your anti-virus program up to date with definitions & check all your downlds before opening them. Also stay away from files less than 1 MB in size. No normal audio or video files will be less than 1 MB. There are viruses on the network but most are less than 1 MB. Don't get confused between KB & MB. 1,000 KB = 1 MB I hope you got your LimeWire from here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
thank you for your prompt response to my questions. I am thankful for your answers....perhaps i should look into my old computer a bit more. Thanks again Jess |
