Download Speed - HELP!

I just installed limewire on my new computer at home and the download speeds are just not fast enough. I am set up with Cable internet, through a router. I just tested my speeds and It shows...

Download Speed - 2758 Kbps
Upload Speed - 146 Kbps

It seems to be a pretty good broadband connection but yet it feels like i'm working on dial up. The max download speed I can generate when downloading a file is 2KB/s. I've been using limewire in my brothers home, he also has Cable internet, and I'm able to download at a much higher speed there. Typically a song will take an average of 1 to 2 minutes to download. Here at home it's HOURS!! Can anyone help me!? PLEASE.

A. Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

B. Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?

C. Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
4. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
5. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
6. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

D. Let's try an experiment, download a magnet link file from here: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml Tell us what happens & what speeds you get.

E. See the following link & follow “ALL” the off-shoot links to find hints & extra skills to help: To continue files downlding (click on link)

* Be aware, you can normally only downld as fast as the sources you're downlding from will allow; ie: how many & how much bandwidth they have available for you. Obviously the more the sources the better.

Right-click on the top of the column bar on the downld window & choose to show vendor/version. So take a closer look at the people you're downlding from. Are the slow ones LimeWire (LW) or another such as Shareaza (RAZA) or another?

does he use the same internet provider as you ?
anyways try this, go to the tools menu in limewire and select options.
You get a new window, in this double click on advanced then firewall config.
You need to change the Listen on Port to 80 and use manual port forwarding and change this to 80.

Best regards

****REPLY****

A. Windows Firewall is disabled, I configured the firewalls for Norton to allow access, as well as disabled them too but did not improve the situation.

B. Did the sample, it said FALSE

C. Description:
1. Windows XP
2. None that I can think of, i've disabled them all.
3. Motorola SB5120 Modem / Linksys BEFSR41 Router
4. Connecting from home
5. Limewire Version 4.9.37 / Java 1.5.0
6. Atlantic Broadband (Middletown, DE)
7. Sharing internet connection through router to my Playstation 2 ONLY. However only one is on at a time so there is no sharing involved. If i'm on the computer, usually the PS2 is off and vice versa.

D. Tried the experiment and basically Magnetmix.com ran me through the LW set up steps again and opened up a 2nd LW window where the download began. Same speed 1 to 2KB/s MAX.

E. Did not attempt this part...starting to lose hope.

Anytime I've tried downloading i've only tried from Cable/DSL users or faster to help the process.

Let me know what your findings are...Thanks for the help!

Make sure your Linksys device has UPnP set to ON!!! See example here Linksys UPnP setting (click on link) as yours will be similar.

Then go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & make sure UPnP is checked.

Your false finding is a firewall issue & it's most likely the Linksys. (just needs adjusted settings hopefully ... at worst manual port forwarding but leave that as a last resort for now!)

You should not go without a firewall! See * Configuring Norton Internet Security but leave XP firewall disabled. XP & Norton are known to interfere with each others operation.

That magnet link should be very fast. So let's hope it's just a set up issue & not your ISP that's shaping your p2p speeds.

After the above change for the Linksys. Relaunch LW. Give it plenty of time to settle (20+ mins depending on how many shared files & incomplete files you have.) Then try again with the magnet link. See how you go. :)

Also redo the Bug Test to see if it's changed from False to True. But do the test at least 20+ mins after LW has been launched. ;)

Download Speed

I am having the same problems. I have applied your suggestions and my speed has gone up from 2 to approx 5. This only applied to video, audio is normally pretty fast.

A. Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access
yes
B. Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?
false

C. Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version?
Windows XP Home
2. What firewalls you have? Windows Firewall
3. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
Motorola SB5100 / D-Link DI-524
4. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? Home
5. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.9.28 / Java 1.5.0_06
6. Who is your isp provider ? Rogers Yahoo High speed connection
7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. connection is shared between laptop & desktop computers. Both are rarely on at the same time. LW is installed on the laptop.

D. Let's try an experiment, download a magnet link file from here: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml Tell us what happens & what speeds you get. starts out at 5-9 goes down to 0 and hovers around 2

I am aware

hi there i was wondering if you could help me out.im new to the internet and its like another wourld to me.i need to find out my connection speed how do i do this:confused:

Lord of the Rings January 6th, 2006 01:30 PM

Choose nearest destination to a test site you can locate here: http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/

Here's some more: (cross compare them) 1. http://www.dslreports.com/stest 2. http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp

But you need to have LW turned off at that time of the test & not use your connection for anything but the test.

How do your LW downld speeds compare ... it all depends on how much your sources you're downlding from are offering in bandwidth, & how many sources. See the following link & follow “ALL” the off-shoot links to find hints & extra skills to help solve your problem: To continue files downlding (click on link)
