What type of movie file works on iPod??

I've tried downloading a bunch of movies and they work fine in iTunes. But when I try to update my iPod, it tells me that the videos aren't compatible!! :eek: What type of file works on iPod? (ie, mpg, mpeg, mp4, avi, mov....) Any help would be appreciated!! :confused:
