What type of movie file works on iPod??

I've tried downloading a bunch of movies and they work fine in iTunes. But when I try to update my iPod, it tells me that the videos aren't compatible!!

What type of file works on iPod? (ie, mpg, mpeg, mp4, avi, mov....) Any help would be appreciated!!
