downloads start fast, then drop off and quit before they finish
 

have win xp, computer works fine, other files download fast(200+kbs), but ever since i've upgraded to the current version about 1 1/2 months ago I've had big trouble getting good results with most every file (mp3's) i look for. lots to choose from, but they almost always refuse to come in now.if they do start to come in, they often start at 40 - 50 kb, then steadily drop off and usually stop altogether, even with a good connection and multiple hosts.
I've tried every tip you offer here(change preference folder, reinstall, limit quality etc.etc.). been using limewire for a year with fabulous luck, now practically nothing comes in. I'm not a rookie, can't solve this thing. tried older versions which i have kept - no luck. other computers in my house work, but not this one. didn't upgrade the others, and won't. why??? i installed limewire on friend's machine lately and also no luck. what the heck??

Speeds dropping off ... it's either due to preferences needing to be refreshed or else, your ISP might be filtering you. See if your ISP is listed here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

Try changing your port to one between (49152 - 65535) & see if that makes any difference. ie: Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls
