I installed vlc and my videos still try to play on wmp. how do i fix that?

You'll have to change your default player, this'll show you

i'm still lost. i am supposed to change my default outside of lime wire but where is that. which menu do i go to for file...properties...and so on

Just open your shared file outside of LW, then you can click on a file & do the player change.

(I made a shortcut to my shared floder & sent it to my desktop...makes it easy to open the folder for changing players & AV scanning files etc)
