playback of dvds

hi there, iv learnt how to download and burn films successfully, not too sure about playback tho, my dvd player doesnt play copies, any idea what i look for when i buy a new one, should it specifically mention avi or what.
I should have said it doesnt play copied films tho it can play mp3s.
