Napster Interference Using LimeWire 4.10.9, my niece tried to download a song when a message relating to Napster appeared. I guess she did not understand the message perfectly and must have clicked the wrong button. She could not recall the exact wording of the message, so I can't provide that here. In any case, whenever she tries to download something now, her browser opens to some Napster site. I read through parts of this forum and found a couple of hints: - add "napster" to the keyword filter list - download from Cable/DSL providers and not T1 or T3 Neither of these suggestions worked. Can anyone offer a solution to this problem? BTW - I have not seen her PC - she relayed all this to me over the phone. So if there are any subtle hints somewhere in the LimeWire window or on the Napster page, they are unknown to me. Thanks EdP |

I've had the same problem, and I don't yet know how to fix it. The situation: For the longest time, whenever I would startup Limewire, I would get a message asking "Limewire is not your default link handler. Make it?" or something along those lines. Every time it popped up, I selected no, until the other day when I was in a hurry, and accidentally selected yes Since then, every time I try to download something, when I click on a song, it opens an IE browser to This Napster Page. Nothing seems to be working to make it otherwise. If you right click and select download, it still does it. I checked through all the options available in LimeWire, but nothing seemed related. I removed and deleted LimeWire from my computer completely, re-downloaded and re-installed it, and it still does it. I searched my computer for anything Napster related, or anything including "link" or "handler," and nothing which seems as though it could be related to my problem showed up. I've searched the internet, and can't seem to find anything refering to the problem, or suggesting how to fix it. I'm stumped. Any inspiration or help, please? |

Making Limewire your default magnetlink handler, will only open Limewire when you press a magnetlink for download. If it said link and not magnetlink, that message I have never seen and it should not appair. Did you get Limewire from the official site www.limewire.com or somewhere else. Alot of scamsites pack ad/spyware into the code for the program My guess is that you are infected with some kind of adware. Try scanning you computer using antivirus or antiad/spyware to see if anything is picked up. if not then try a onlinescan Check out this thread for links and scanners: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=41432 if that doesn't work either then visit Norbiesworld for help (step 5 in the thread) Last edited by Sleepless; June 21st, 2006 at 11:39 AM. |

I'll bet that's the message my niece got and answered Yes to. My next step was to uninstall/reinstall LimeWire, but seeing as how you already did that and it did not help, I won't bother. I'd guess that whatever app presented that message created an entry in the obscure depths of the registry, so no matter what one does with LimeWire, that switch is always set. Next time I'm at her PC, I'll run a registry cleaner, but I'll bet that doesn't help either. >It seems it's not something you can get rid of< I can't believe that. There must be SOME way to undo this irritant. |

Sleepless - >Making Limewire your default magnetlink handler ...< How can you tell if Limewire is your default magnetlink handler? And if it isn't, how do you make it so? >... will only open Limewire when you press a magnetlink for download.< How do you know if a link is a magnetlink? >...visit Norbiesworld for help (step 5 in the thread)< What thread? Norbiesworld is a big place. ;o) |

2. This is an example of a magnetlink. Links you press to download something. (html and ftp downloadlinks should not open Limewire as they are not magnetlinks) magnet:?xt=urn:sha1:4UDGKIZQVLAKJR7YJHR5HWJT6EPMCC XG&xt=urn:ed2k:547222ee563738bae16a34f0a22fa04b&xl =7189339&dn=02-jay-z-meet_the_parents-fua.mp3 3. in the thread I put in my post before http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=41432 Just register there and make a new thread explaining your problem. Then you will get instructions on how to post a HighjackThis log etc. etc. Make sure to post all relevant information (maybe even post the HighjackThis log in the first thread. Instructions are on the page that opens when pressing link in step 5) |
