Default Down Load Speeds on Satellite systmes - Please Help

Please help, I am in Belize working on a remote Atoll managing a Marine Research Station and Lime Wire is a God send !!

My problem is sometimes downloads start off Ok with speeds of upto 60kb/s but after about 5- 10 mins they soon drop to 1-2 Kb/s. Sometimes when starting downloads the speeds start at about 1-2kb/s and don't stray far from this.

When I download limewire to install for the first time I can get down load speeds in excess of 300kb/s.

My internet is through a satellite connection with Direcway from Houston and a linksys wrt 54g. According to an internet speed check I can download at 1078 kbps and upload at 343 kbps - if this is the case why are my downloads so slow ?

I have deleted the .limewire folder as so many threads recommend but this is not making any difference and my Java is the most recent version as is Limewire.

If any one can help I would be very grateful, please don't make replies too technical I'm Ok on computers but not a genius !!

Many thanks

Try downloading a file from here & see what speed you get
http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml
(these files should download pretty quickly!)

Do you see the firewall icon (brick wall in front of the blue earth)? Your router usually needs port forwarding to get rid of the firewall!

You might be a victim of Direcway's Fair Access Policy, have a read through this article (remember though that it's from May 2003)

Also this info, but it's not dated so I've no idea how old it is!

It's probably worth your while calling & finding out exactly what their policy is now regarding use of p2p apps

http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml - Just tried downloading a file from here it starts off at about 150 kb/s and then drops pretty quickly to 1-2 kb/s it looks like I might be the victim of Direcway's Fair Access Policy. Is there anything I can do about this or do I simply have to accept it ?

Thanks

I saw comments somewhere that many satellite services will shape bandwidth for p2p program use. It looks like that's the case for you too. I don't think proxies will work with satellite. So basically you will just have to wear it. I guess you could try changing your connection & listening ports to a higher one. But that might not make a difference. ie: choose a port between 49152 - 65535, such as 64049 & go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change both port listings from 6346 to a high one as suggested. You may need to relaunch LW before it takes effect.
