Exclamation Why won't it play?? Video file won't play in OSX

It's not a avi codec thingy, and i tried it in videolan and it still woudnt work, and the kind on the file, it says its a quicktime player. And when i try to open it in the quicktime player, it says "this movie cannot be opened....can someone help me with this? I am so confused, i thought videolan was the best video thing on the web, or at least someone said that.

What is the extension of the file? Also what is the size of the video file? Select file & go to file menu -> Get info.

If VLC can't play it, then I don't hold great hopes for it. If you have Roxio Toast 7, drop it into the video tab & see if it plays or recognises it. Or if you have iMovie, then try opening it with it or importing it.

A. Open VLC player. Then drag & drop the video file onto the VLC icon in the dock & see if VLC will play it.

B. If it says it's a quicktime player file but it's an avi, then that means QuickTime Player is the default program to open it. That means if you double-click on the file, QT player will attempt to open it. Problem is, QT player won't be able to play it unless you have the correct codecs. Best codecs for QT Player are 1. DivX, 2. XviD, 3. 3ivx.

For QT player make sure it has avi set in its settings. QuickTime Plug-ins & MIME settings (click on link)
