help with speed and connection settings?
 

Hi, im not sure what connection i have, modem,t1 t2 or dsl, how can i find out.
Also i never get downloads speeds of more that 12kbs, are my settings wrong.
90% of my downloads are mp3.

go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest and run a couple of speed tests from different sites, without Limewire running.

First note that 1 Kilobyte per second KBps is equivalent to 8 Kilobits per second kbps

You will get a speed as let's say 800 kilobits per second kbps, which is equivalent to a download speed of 100kyloBYTES per second (divide by 8) Kilobytes is the speed you see in your download window.

Your speed test should show about 96-120 kbps which would be a fast modem connection. If it shows more, then you may need to make some adjustments.

Personally I have a speed which should give me about 50 KBps, but I usually get a lot less than that downloading mp3s from 1 or 2 hosts, since I can only download at the speed the other hosts upload.

Let us know how this goes for starters:)

1 at 3941 Kbps (kilobits per second)
another at 4.68 Mbps
and last at 4314kbps

should i still be only getting 11kps downloads from limewire for mp3s

Ww. That's a respectable speed! I reckon you should have your speed setting at T3 and have the cursor between 90 and 99% and in theory (but don't get too excited:)) should be capable of downloads of round about 300KBps ( remember the big difference between Kbps ans KBps) I have worked this out from the measurements that the Limewire Preferences show, and they may not be accurate. Set on unlimited you might get a speed aproaching 500KBps

There are two things, among others, that will stop this sort of speed however and these are the speed of the hosts you upload from, most of whom will have a much lower speed, and even if you have 12?-14 of them (depending on whether you have Basic or Pro) In truth you will get a lower speed.

The other is your isp (Internet service Provider) who may not allow you to use your maximum speed on p2p operation, and we have found that it is this which causes slow speeds for many.

Let us know if this helps ... Tell us who your isp is and possibly have a look at this and see if it makes sense and helps: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks.

Also try downloading any file from http://www.magnetmix.com/ That should give you an indication of your maximum speed.

ive changed the settings i think, but download still no more that about 7, my upload is crazy tho at 20kb/s.
