Default Junk Segregation

I've noticed that a lately, most of the search results I've been getting have the junk icon next to them. I know that most people either put the junk icon on an item if they feel it's irrelevant to their search or if it's got a virus.

How can I tell which is which? I want to download music, but then what if the day comes when I get only junk? Can someone please tell me how I can determine whether a junk file is safe or whether it's tainted? Thanks.

I hate to say it, but probably trial and error. I've downloaded some files that were marked as junk and they played fine. Check the file size. Most music files are over 2MBs(2000KBs). I stick with mp3's for music. You can preview it once it starts d/loading, and if it sits there forever awaiting sources it 's probably junk.

This thread has good info: How to find music.

There's also a lot of fake files on the network. You can read more about them here: Recognising Fake files.

Oh... so what you're implying is that files under 2 MB are probably bad ones?

Sort of. It's just a general rule of thumb. Viruses tend to be very small, less than 1 mb. but not all small files are viruses. Pics and documents can be quite small also. Though if your just d/loading music files you shouldn't have to worry about it. Like I said I stick to mp3's for music and for video I stick with mpg and avi. I've never gotten a virus from LW. Stay away from any program files as they are loaded with viruses(zip, exe, rar, ect).

The junk filter needs to be trained. It's a dynamic learning filter & takes time to learn. If your getting too many good files being marked as junk, you may have to reset it and start over. You train it by marking files as junk as you run across them. Also good files that show up as junk can be marked as good. To reset the filter go to Tools>Options>Filters>Junk, click "Forget Training Data" and click apply. Then start over training the filter. To mark a file, just right click on it and go to "Mark as".
