Exclamation Firewall preventing downloads.. I didnt even know i had one! help shutting it down?

Title mainly explains, but I'll go into full detail seeing as how I have nothing better to do.

I'm TRYING to download, but it gets stuck at 'connecting'.

After everything in these last 15 minutes, I've finally realized the globe in the bottom corner with the wall. So, I'm assuming its the firewall preventing my downloading.

Now, heres the thing.

I didn't even know I HAD a firewall..*headdesk*
But, apparently I do, and it's causing my life to come crashing down upon me. Well, that's a slight exaggeration..But..uhm..anywho..

How can I go about shutting down this firewall I didn't even know existed? I don't have any anti-virus programs or anything else of the sort..Well, to my knowledge anyways.

I'm really hoping this is in the right forum (I'm sorry if it's not! I'm having problems with getting my brain to navigate around this forum..) ,and I'd _love_ help with this.

In case it makes a difference, I'm using Windows XP and have Mozilla and IE7 on my computer. I also have another file sharing program, but mainly it's not giving me the results I need and Limewire is (yay Limewire!). funny thing is, I haven't had any firewall issues with the _other_ program.

Well, thanks for even reading this, and triple thanks if you can help me!

EDIT - Of course, shouldnt the firewall be preventing search results too? Well...Maybe not..Wow I have no idea what to do. Since when did I become to technologically inept? Grr.. Well.. I'm becoming more lost by the second. *headdesk 5x*

Sorry, stupid me never saw that.

1. OS version? Windows XP

2. What firewalls you have? I didnt know I did

3. How much ram? i dont know

4. Hard Disk space available? 9.22 GB If I'm checking the right thing..

5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) DSL

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Westell? It's mainly all convered in duct tape, but has been running fine.

7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire 4.12.6, Java 1.5.0_09

9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Verizon

10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Slow and useless for a minute, remaing on the page I'm at, and than "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? Yes, this internet connection is sort of the "extension". The main black box with the switch and phone cord is hooked up on a computer in a different room, but this one has the little black thing plugged into it that gives me the internet. I also use Morpheus.

12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I've been using Limewire on and off for a few years. Whenever my paid for programs are being incompetent I download LW basic for the better results (different programs have different results! go figure! lol) I've never had problems with it.

13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes. And I have no clue what firewall it's talking about.

It sounds like a NAT firewall which is built into your modem/router...You really need to find out the model number for it...looks like you will have to peel the duct tape off....

802.11g Wireless USB Adapter? *sigh* There might be something of the front that is still has the tape on it, but If I remove it it will fall apart and I'll have no internet at all.

Windows XP has a firewall...

Start...control panel...windows firewall

Make sure LW is listed as an exception (or just turn it off to see if it's the problem...turn it back on, though!)

Good Luck

Default Have a look at this thread...

But before you do, try the port 6346 test again as there was a problem with the page; I've just checked and all is well now.

Regards.

PS No anti-virus and you didn't check that you had a firewall: you're naked!
