TalkTalk are known to shape bandwidth...have a look at this thread.

If you use the forum search to look for TalkTalk, you'll find other threads too

Sorry about the late reply, had a virus prob to get rid of due to a LW co user.
Thank's for the links will keep them in mind,
Further investigation into my prob i found that if i physically disconected my phone line my computer says, connected, speed 10Mbps. but of cause it's not and no home page will be displayed just an error page.
when i am connected and use task manager (Ctrl Alt Del) click onto the networking tab it shows a whopping amount of 9%, thus making me think it could be a modem problem. any more ideas anybody

I did look for info about your modem but I just can't find anything helpful....can you give me a model number, that might help

Do you know if it's a modem or a modem-router? If you have info at home (manual etc) have a look & see. You may have a firewall within your modem & that could be why you're seeing the firewall icon. Just remember though, that even if you can port forward & get rid of the firewall icon, if TalkTalk are shaping it's not going to help your speed much if at all.

One of the threads in that very first link I gave you has info about what hours shaping takes place. Have you tried downloading outside peak times to see if speeds improve?

Upgrade Java to 1.06, i'm not sure what part of the www.java.com site i downloaded it from, but i know i downloaded it form the official Java site, maybe, just maybe, it will improve your downloading speeds.
Try using Shareaza, it uses Gnutella 1, 2 and Edonkey 2000.

my modem-router is R-ADSL-C4-2 with a brand name called Dynamode
since last my post i have changed the way my computer connects from usb2
to a network card, as a result i now have a link speed of 100Mbps with
networking at 0.07%-0.44% and a max of 0.5%.
when downloading my rate is 25kb/s-40kb/s and a max of 60kb/s
even with 11 hosts.
If you can use network manger (Ctrl + Alt +Delete) then click networking tab
what is your networking %

d.d-thom.
Here are instructions for port forwarding your router, (this should be done)
Use this link, dont forget to set up a static IP first.
http://portforward.com/english/route...-C4-2index.htm
P.S..You will still need to speak to talk talk, ask what times they apply P2P
shaping, & avoyed D/L at those times.
Peace.

That's because Windows does not recognize the true speed of the net link (Dial-Up is an exception), no matters if you have a Gygabyte connection, Windows only and always will recognize it as a 100 M/bytes per second, so, the net usage is based upon that.
