Do a speed test & tell us the results.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Download a file from here & see if the same thing happens.

Just download any Magnetmix file...it's just a test to see how fast your download is (things should download quickly).

XP has it's own firewall, make sure it's configured to allow LW
User Cant Connect - LimeWire

HughesNet have a FAP, maybe you've been hit by that?
The Fair Access Policy (FAP)

Try changing ports. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535) > Apply > ok.

You could try port forwarding for your router. The instructions are here.
Port Forwarding for the Dlink DI-524
Don't forget the step of setting up a static IP address. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router all have to be the same number

the download from that site didn't work it said connecting and eventually changed to need more sources. as for the fap, i was aware of that but the thing i don't understand is i used to use bear share with the same internet provider. i changed the port and tried port fowarding but still didn't seem to work. is there anything else you can think of to fix this?

p.s. unfortunately, the windows firewall link you gave me was blocked by my content filter and with my luck that's the thing keeping limewire from working. is there any way you can tell me what that link says and instructions for the firewall to allow lw? thank you soo soo much!! : ]

This is from that link

First make sure that LimeWire is running, and then open the Control Panel by going to Start > Settings. Switch to Classic View if you are not already in that mode.

Double-click the Windows Firewall icon to open the settings.

If the firewall is off, then there is no need to continue. The Windows Firewall will not prevent LimeWire from connecting. If it is on, click the Exceptions tab.

Make sure that LimeWire is listed as an exception and that it is checked. Click Edit to make sure that the correct path has been specified. Note that if LimeWire is not running, you will not see LimeWire in the list unless you added it manually in the past. If no exception is found with the correct path when LimeWire launches, an exception is created. When LimeWire is closed, the exception is deleted.

Have you got green connection bars & no firewall icon now?

If songs sit connecting for ages & then get stuck needing sources forever, you're probably seeing fake files. Try using the All Types search, look for album or artist rather than song title & go for a file with 10 sources or less.
