Default codecs: a song which my Windows Media Player 11 won't support

I downloaded a song which my Windows Media Player 11 won't support because of the codec used to compress the file. Is there a way to convert the song in my Player so it will play it?

AFAIK WMP 11 has most commonly used codecs built in. Unlike previous versions. But, you still might be able to download the extra codec for it.

What type of file extension does the song file have?

Also, have you checked your wmp options to be sure all codecs are enabled? Sometimes you need to select them to be sure they are turned on.

Hi, the file is a .mp3 file. Most downloads work perfectly, but this one would not play on WMP, with the message that the codec was not supported. I think I have all the codecs automatic on the WMP. Any other suggestions?

hmm .. there are variations of mp3. Best I can think of (other than trying other players) is looking for other mp3 codecs; Free codecs (click on blue link) (check the audio codecs section)

(BTW there is a small chance someone has manually changed the file extension. It might have been an m4a / mp4 file. I've come across those before .. even some mp3's that were videos & vice versa lol. If you have an file analyzer on your computer .. check it.)

Thanks, I'll try that site. I can play that file on the RealAudio player, but all my files are organized on the WMP, and I'd like to add this one, too.
