Angry Can't open .sit,.img,.dmg. on Mac issue.

Well, I guess by reading the forum that I'm not the only one to have this problem. .sit,.img,.dmg. won't open or unstuff on my mac under Mac OS 9.2.2. The remain limewire files, though they got the right file extensions. I tried everything possible: changing files's names, downgrading from LimeWire 2.1 to LimeWire 2.0, upgrading to Limewire 2.1.1 beta, upgrading Stuffit expander 5.5 to Stuffit Lite 6.5.1, upgrading diskcopy to 6.3.3; it's still NOT WORKING!!! I always got the same error message from stuffit (file corrupted or invalid archive)and diskcopy (error -8816, file is not from a recognised type). I just don't know what to do, maybe downgrading to an earlier version of LimeWire, throw my Mac by the window? I'm waiting for your clever suggestions. And if it's a known bug of LimeWire, please fix it, you genius programmers!

I am also having the problem of not being able to open files on a Mac. I have downloaded a .sit and it does nothing when I try to open it. I would like to be able to offer files to upload also, but if I can't even get the downloaded files to work, I don't even want to mess with offering files to upload.

I haven't had much trouble unstuffing programs in OS X, they work fine. I counldn't even get Limewire to run in OS 9. Keep trying.

Question

Hi

I have exactly the same problems...I was thinking it might be a MacOS X problem. If the program is stuffed with the carbonized StuffitExpander, there may be a problem opening them in Classic.

Angry .dmg files

Similar problem. Stuffit bundled with Mac OS 9.2 doesn't recognise .dmg & says it's a Limewire doc or unknown file type!

What is Disk Copy - is it a Mac thang? does it help?

hoping someone out there has found a way around this!!

Solution: Find the icon of StuffIt Expander and drag the file to it. It will unpack most anything, especially a .sit file, which StuffIt created. It will not mount disk images. Keep an alias of Expander on your desktop for convenience.

Remember, however, that .dmg files are only for OS X and will do you no good under 9.x. An .img file is a volume image that Disk Copy or Toast will mount. Send Sherlock to find Disk Copy. It is already on your Mac. This is a handy little application that, among other things, can split a disk image so that it can fit on diskettes or CD.

(You know you wouldn't have this problem if Apple were sending decent documentation with their computers like they used to...)

To avoid this problem in the future, for 9.x, check your File Exchange and Internet Control Panels and see if these suffixes are set for Expander or Disk Copy as necessary. Then they will arrive in Limewire with the proper creator and file type.

OK, Mr./Ms. Unregistered who checked this thread four months ago:

Does this happen with ALL files with suffixes .sit, .img, etc., or just some of them? Is there an error message? If so, what is it? Do you have problems with .sit, .img., etc. that you download from other sources? And you are certain that you are not trying to mount a .dmg in 9.x?

Have you ever wondered why there were so many different sizes for the same file or installer? There is junk out there: whether it is ignorance or malice is a matter we need not go into. So some of these files you download are likely going to be trash.

Now, for those that are not trash, dragging to the icon of Expander is going to work because the file was stuffed with StuffIt in the first place. If the file has a generic icon and in get info. (command+i) it is called a Limewire document, then double-clicking will just take you back to Limewire. An .img file is designed to work with DiskCopy. A .smi is self-mounting; so is a .sea. Both Disk Copy and StuffIt have been used without problems by millions of Macintosh users since they were introduced.

If worse comes to worse, get HexEdit and open the file and see what the header says.
