How do I know if it is a real mp3 file

I recently got a Sansa Shaker and I can not download most of the songs I want on to it. I have only down loaded songs that say mp3 but when they are put on the memory card it says it is a wma file and it won't play. Also my computer says it is converting them but I guess it is not. Can anybody PLEASE tell me how to tell if a file is a true mp3 file. I am so tired of downloading songs I can't use.

Have you tried playing the songs using LW's media player?

Which player do you normally use on your computer?

I have windows media player, the sansa shaker only uses mp3 files, nothing else at all. When I down load the songs they say mp3 but once they are on the memory card they say wma files. The sansa website says that some songs are overwritten with mp3 but that they are originally something else and that is why they won't play. It says it has to be a true mp3 file and I don't know how to tell if a song is a true mp3 file or not. I don't have any problem getting the songs to play on windows media player just the sansa shaker. Windows media player says it is converting the songs while I am putting them on the shaker but I guess it is not working.

hmmmmmmm....interesting....the following is purely theory:

it may be that you are using the most current version of WMP and it is doing some junky M$ cr@p and converting them to wma upon tranferring....try going directly to your downloads folder and moving the mp3s over that way (i.e. totally skipping WMP)

That is a theory I myself had but to be honest I do not know how to do that. How do I do it directly without using wmp? Where is my downloads folder? When I hook up the sansa it atomatically takes me to where i am working from.

kill the program that opens up when you connect the player, then go to My Computer and double click on it and it should open up like its an external HDD (hard drive)...then open up your downloads folder and drag files out of it over to the player (i.e. you will have 2 windows open at the same time so use drag and drop)...the location of your downloads will be given in LW via tools>options>saving (or somesuch..I no longer use LW so my memory is a bit foggy on that subject)
