downloads become "applications"???? After downloading what must have been some kind of trojan horse, I now have the problem whereby if I don't immediatly remove the downloaded movie from the shared folder to my desktop, it becomes an application that say's "corrupted by transfer" has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to detect this bug and remove? -VERY FRUSTRATED. |

First off you should be running some kind of reputable antivirus software. If you want there is a very good free AntiVirus program called AVG that is distributed by Grisoft on this web site: AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista Make sure all it's virus signature definitions are up to date (this should happen automatically during installation) and scan you whole computer for viruses or trojan horse files. This software should also quarantine or remove any malware you downloaded by mistake and leave your computer in a much better state than it was. After running this software try your computer and if the corrupt file is still present try to delete it and empty your trash can. Then report back here as to whether the results were good or otherwise. |

Hi Robert Thanks for taking the time to reply to my problem. I can't seem to find a AVG that complies with win 2000 which is what I use. It initialy detected an "outdated version of roxio cd creator that had a bug" and I can't find this file (exe) or anything with this name on it anywhere in my computer. Could this be the t horse? if so could it be disguesed under the roxio name. Do you know of another virus program that runs in win 2000? Have any ideas how I might detect and remove this "roxio" thing? Thanks, Jay |

I've just checked in AVG forums and (apart from a small glitch with FAT32 file systems) AVG Antivirus Series 8 complies and works fine with Windows 2000. see here: AVG Free Forum :: AVG 8.0 Free Edition - Installation Issues :: AVG 8.0 FREE - Supported Platforms (read the whole article for details about the glitch) (If series 8 is not suitable because of the glitch and you don't want to change file systems series 7.5 free version can be used instead.) See here: AVG Free Forum :: AVG 7.5 Installation Issues :: AVG 7.5 FREE - Supported Platforms Version 7.5 downloads available from site listed below: AVG Antivirus 7.5 (Free) - Downloads - freeware, shareware, software trials, evaluation - Atomic v2.6 - Maximum Power Computing - www.atomicmpc.com.au The AVG free product is a very good antivirus application. That file you referred to could well be the one that's causing all your problems (Some viruses do disguise themselves with legitimate software names.) (especially if you are unaware of installing it or are unable to find it's installation folder on your computer in the C:\Program Files section.) I'd say give AVG a go and let it find whatever it can and if possible fix the problem for you. I'll just add that in this day and age you'd have to be mad not to run some sort of antivirus and if possible a firewall as well. There are plenty of reputable products available and the AVG paid version (which includes a firewall and a few little extras that the free version does'nt have) is particularly good according to my computer technician.
