Hi all, I am very much a newbie to LW. My question is I have left LW on for 3 days at a time. While I get some uploads (my largest is 113) I have hits in the high thousands. Does this mean that some can not get thru to me? I am behind a firewall, but I read somewhere that if I can download others have access to me as well. I am on Windows XP, AOL and a cable (comcast) connection.

Thanks for any insight on this.

The number of hits that you see shows how many times your files have appeared in someone's search results... it doesn't necessarily mean that people are looking for the exact files that you're sharing.

The network's search isn't too precise - say if you search for 'the black cat', you'd see results for 'the cat', 'the black', 'black cat', 'black', 'cat' etc etc... so other people might have only 1 keyword in their search results that appears in one of your files - but it can still show as a hit.
Hope that makes sense

If you're behind a firewall, some people may be able to 'push' through your firewall to download, but chances are most won't be able to.
Just because you can download, doesn't mean that others can download from you

Can you give us your details? That way, we can help you more.

Default Here is the info you asked for

ok here is the info you need Birdy and I appreciate you help.
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) If using Windows Vista, please tell us whether you have an Administrator user account. Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? Hmmm, I think it comes automatically thru my Comcast router. The other 2 are disconnected.
3. How much ram? 2.21 GHz, 1.87 RAM
4. Hard Disk space available? 5.567GB, both Drive C and Drive D, 1.847 used
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Linksys and RCA digital broadband ( not getting on the floors to look for those model numbers in the nite. LOL They are approx. 2 years old
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.)? Home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ 4.18.8 for LW, just d/l the latest Java a few weeks ago.
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Mainly AOL (don't laugh) also can use Yahoo and IE, but am more comfortable with AOL
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Yes, my test worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. 2 other puters in the home, but I think I am the "brain"
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. Have used off and on for a few years, just always felt that my uploads should be higher as I am sharing over 1K of songs. A few years back, I d/l my entire CD collection to my puter. For instance, ALL of my John Mayall songs get tons of hits, but NO downloads, that seems odd.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Usually I do, but I don't tonite, do I need to be worried? I do have good security ( I think) Mcafee and Malwarebytes.
_14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? I think port but not sure.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall See Q 13. I read in yer FAQS that "if you can download, others can upload", check it out. LOL
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? Again, I have always successfully d/l, I was just worried that folks could not u/l from me for some reason. The most u/ls I had (before I shut down last nite) was 113, many 8's, 5's, 2's, 1's, etc.
Many of the puter geeks at work told me I should NEVER use LW...too dangerous in several aspects. But I like you guys! LOL I was reading on some forum on LW about viruses. I only do music, no movies, games, etc. and never any wma
Hope this helps. Also is there a way I can auto-link to this particular thread, I seem to have to go thru many steps to get back here. I tried that "permalink" thing, but not sure how to access it or make it work.

Color me blonde...LOL

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Well the geeks are right in a way - heaps of dangerous files are shared on the Gnutella network (that LW connects to). But if you use a bit of common sense & are careful with what you download, you can safely use LW.

.exe, .rar, .zip, .wma, .wmv & .mov files can be nasty. So you're wise to stay away from games. And even if you do find a clean game to download, half the time it'll be missing a license key... so it's really not worth it! Check out the threads below for info about .wma, .wmv & .mov files & other bad files.

Make sure that you have a good AV program. Keep it updated & scan all downloads with your AV before you open them. PeerGuardian2 is also a handy thing to have Check out the link below for more info & download links. It's free.

Not seeing the firewall icon is a good thing. Did you notice more uploads when the firewall icon wasn't showing? If you see the firewall icon, it means that there's a firewall somewhere within your setup (might be a software firewall, or could be within a modem/router) that's not configured properly to allow LW. It's no indication of whether you have a firewall protecting your computer - it relates purely to LW. I have a firewall within my router & have Comodo software firewall but I don't see the firewall icon in LW - my computer is still protected, though

Chances are that your Linksys router has a firewall. They're sometimes unreliable using UPnP (maybe that's why your firewall icon comes & goes), so port forwarding is the way to go. You need to make sure that you have actually set up port forwarding within the routers config & also have set up a static IP address first. Just ticking the 'use manual port forwarding' box within LW isn't enough. Since I don't know your model, have a look at the link below. Choose your router model from the list & then choose LW from the list of programs. Then you'll find easy to follow instructions. Don't forget the static IP setup first (there's a link to that within the instructions)... otherwise port forwarding won't work. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within your router's setup have to all be the same number.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

You don't have to turn off your software firewalls - that will leave you less protected. Just make sure that you're only using one firewall (2 will conflict with each other) & configure that firewall to allow LW. I'd choose McAfee over the XP firewall. There are instructions here for configuring that: Port Forwarding for the McAfee Security Center
