Depends whether they are copyright or not. If yes, I cannot give you specific advice since it would go against the forum rules. For backup, there are programs around that do allow you to make a backup copy onto your computer. Then you'd need a conversion tool to convert them all to a single mp4 file. I'd suggest either Mpeg 4 or H.264 format which is the better one & is now being used for HD blue ray disks.
One program you could use to convert to mpeg4/H.264 is MPEG Streamclip (free). However I export to H.264 via Export to Quicktime option & choose H.264 in QT's options. You could instead choose Export to AVI & choose H.264 video. At least that way you will have avi file extension.
