Sounds like you are using an older LW 5 version. Have you tried updating to LW 5.2? With LW 5.2 you can set downloads to over 10 from memory.
The limit of downloads might be related to simply luck of connecting to the hosts. Often wise to re-search your original search terms & then do a Find More Results search. This will hopefully find more hosts to connect to.

If the files are torrent files .. then that can be more to do with luck.

are these torrent files? If yes, go to the original torrent files you downloaded & re-open them with LW.

For Gnutella files .. complicated. You would need to downgrade back to LW 4.16 .. reload the incomplete files, then reinstall the new version of LW again. Downgrading to LimeWire 4 from 5 & resuming incomplete downloads

ive tried opening them with LW but not successful..
i don't know the difference between Torrent & Gnutella but as they won't open i guess they are gnutella..
anyway, the problem with downloading more than 3 at once is fixed...
in the new version, in options i don't see a drop down menu to select the amount of files to download... is it not there anymore or am i needing my glasses...?
thanks

It's in a different location. Options -> Tools -> Advanced -> Transfers, I think it's called without looking.
