Help Please ... Unable to scan for viruses

Bear with me please, I'm new to the Gnutella Forum and to LimeWire. Did you get a resolution to the message "unable to scan for viruses"? I am in the same boat and have checked my tools/options/transfer settings to be sure it's set to scan files on download. I have Windows Vista (with Service Pack 2) and am running LimeWire 5.6.2

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, SamLuvsEm

I have the same problem when I down load it wants to scan for virus. I have mcafee and I tell Mcafee to scam share folder and then megabyte to do the same. It would be better if limewire could tell the virus program to check the file. I guess it just does not know how. I have been using lime wire a lone time and it never checked virus. The pirate program wants to.

If you're happy to use your McAfee to scan files, you could always try File_Girl71's version of Pirate Edition. See post #3 here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/gettin...e-edition.html

As you can see, she's got rid of AVG.

I may have the same problem ; every time i download a song i get an error message saying that the mp3 could not be inspected because the virus scanner is still downloading its first set of virus definitions . Limewire anti virus protection is powered by avg .what can i do , please help me , lol lol ; and thank you sexy asian file girl for voting in my poll .

AVG might be broken in the Pirate Edition... I saw the same thing.

Did it ever work previously for you in PE?

Might be easier for you to use your own AV to scan files. Keep your regular AV updated & then use it to scan new files from LW's saved folder after download.

If it's annoying you to see the error, you can uncheck the scan option (tools > options > transfers > uncheck 'scan files I download for viruses' > ok) then you shouldn't see the 'unable to scan' message.

Or you could use File_Girl's version of PE, which has no AVG included.

No birdy , this orange error message has always come up in pe ;

thank you for the help . Wont vista defender and my normal regular free avg automatically scan new files in the saved download folder ??

runt66 January 6th, 2011 12:46 AM

One more thing ; for about one month after pe started , i could not get into gnutellaforums ; it kept saying that my ip addy was banned !!! Lol ; then after a bit longer i came back and my nic and password worked perfectly ; please explain if possible .

I don't use Windows Defender or AVG. Looks like you can set Defender to real time protection: Windows Defender: Support

AVG's paid version seems to have real time protection. But I don't think the free one does. That's something you should check out.
But it's quick & easy to scan manually anyway... just get into the habit of scanning a file as soon as it's downloaded :)

Tell me what happened & then we'll both know. We think it was some weird bug. Everybody was banned. Admins were banned. It was a PITA for everyone.

Ty birdy , one last thing , lol ;

advanced option -- external access ,

please tell me more about this rest interface ;
do you check or uncheck that little box .

birdy January 15th, 2011 11:12 PM

I have mine unchecked. I asked someone about this & here's what he said:

Quote:

The REST interface is for other apps on the same machine to control or query the client - I'm not sure exactly what features it exposes, but I think it was meant to allow the client to communicate with music players, the web browser, etc.
So I guess it's up to you whether you leave it unchecked or check it & see whether it gives you any advantages. Since the PE is a Beta version of LW anyway, there's probably no way of knowing whether the option works well or not since documentation from LW isn't available any more.

runt66 January 16th, 2011 12:18 AM

Is a beta version an untested , untried , experimental , version ??

birdy January 16th, 2011 12:27 AM

A Beta version is normally released for testing - so that bugs can be identified & fixed. Once that happens there's usually either a release candidate or a stable release.

It works for me on my other PC but since I installed on my new system AVG is not working. Any ideas on why it's currently not working?

Are you using the Pirate Edition or the LimeWire 5.5 Pro version?
It is not possible to activate new LW 5.5 Pro versions.
For many people, the AV has stopped working in the Pirate Edition. Likewise for mine.
hmm for my LW 5.5.9 Pro, it seems it is now no longer seeking AV updates. It's my guess the AV internet link connection has been deliberately broken by either LW.org, RIAA or AVG. Thus, AVG is no longer sending AV updates to LW users.

Lord of the Rings January 19th, 2011 09:14 PM

I forgot to mention anyway, not sure if it makes a difference, but in LW's menu bar, Tools -> Options -> Transfers, there is an option to enable AV scanning for downloaded files.
However I have my doubts it will work if there are no AV definitions installed anyway. This seems to be broken as mentioned.
