What kind of external drive is it? Size, brand, model, type of connection & connection port?
LW never was very good with accepting external drives, not sure how it is with LW 5 now.

The drive must be connected and active before LW opens else LW's download location will go back to default.

One problem with external drives is they sleep whenever they can. That's how most are designed. That means they are often not totally active when LW opens.

Default saving files to an external hard drive

There are two threads with this title, but the other has rather wandered off the point.

I’m using Limewire 5.5.13. I wish to download files that will be too large for my hard disk so I should like to save them to an external drive, which would be Verbatim model 47513, size 1.36tb.

I’ve never had a problem with drives “sleeping”. The one I would save to is used for an unattended backup which runs with no problems, but wouldn’t the flow of data be continuous which would serve to keep it awake?

The problem as I see it is that while the download is taking place the files are stored in a folder called Incomplete, and I cannot see how to change the location of this folder.

Tools -> Options -> Transfers, click the Browse button & direct it to the external drive. The drive must be on prior to each occasion you open LW else it will default to original download location.

New incomplete files will go to new location, some of the older ones will also but not all. I am not sure which & what this is determined by. Maybe media type.

I have always used an external drive to store downloads from Limewire and can confirm that there is not a facility to move the "Incomplete" folder from its default to another drive.

However, the "Incomplete" folder will go (or follow) where ever you configure the "Saved" and "Shared" folders to reside. For example, if you configure your "Saved" and "Shared" folders for your external F:\ drive, i.e. "F:\Saved" and "F:\Shared" then you will find that your "Incomplete" folder will be "F:\Incomplete".

Hope this helps.

If you opened up the Downloads file (Downloads.dat) with Wordpad (need to set it to open any type), you will notice the file incomplete file locations are listed. You could potentially change them to the external drive to where the new drive is & choose the incomplete folder there.

You would then need to shift the actual incomplete files that had not earlier shifted to that location also. You could only do this whilst LW is closed. To find the Downloads.dat file you will need to access the LW preferences folder.

Example:

Change:
sq~tQC:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Limewire\Incomplete\T-7324901-King-Big.mp3w\xq~

To:
sq~tQF:\Drive name\Incomplete\T-7324901-King-Big.mp3w\xq~

Whatever the drive is called. Would need to be exact.

Thanks to both. Not clear from LW itself, which gives the option to change the folder for saved files but does not mention temporary ones.

This was quite an adventure. I downloaded the torrent four times from Demonoid. Each time it came down with a different size, at about one eighth of what it was meant to be. Isohunt gave me a torrent of the proper size but LW told me that there was a problem opening it. Eventually I tried µTorrent and it worked. I still need the external drive because of the size, but it gave me the option to save there. Expected finish time is four to six months if nothing goes wrong.

Since using the Java 7 fix on the file girls edition. When I go to Options>Transfers and change my Saved folder location. Limewire freezes. I can only get out by killing the process in task manager, Any Advice? See Screen Shots,

It's a Java 7 bug. There's no fix for it to my knowledge.
Only two alternatives I can think of. 1. Find the limewire.props file in the preferences folder and manually change the location of your downloads (this works, I tried it a few months ago.)
or 2. downgrade to java 6, removing java 7.

Edit: took me ages to find it, but I answered a similar question here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...tml#post371929. Same thing happens with all LW 5 versions running under Java 7, not only LPE.

The inability of changing download directory (causes freezes when you attempt to) and the 64-bit java updates are two bugs that we must contend with if we use Java 7.

(The 64-bit java updates result in LW opening with an error window and changing location of its settings and download folders to top level of user directory and inability to connect. Reinstalling the 32-bit java makes it all go back to normal. Only applicable if you are using 64-bit Windows + computer.)

Thank You... Changing the Limewire.props file worked perfectly!
