Playing downloaded movies

How do I know if my media player will be able to open the movies I am downloading? It says it will support AVI but when I have downloaded the movie and try to play it, it says it cannot. What can I do?

Get xtra codecs http://www.free-codecs.com/ or VLC which is a free player with in-built codecs: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose nearest mirror site)
