Default FrostWire True version

Whilst the main proggie's of FS have said they'll try to stay as close to LW as possible in regards to developments with exceptions. Exactly when will FW be willing to take on their own original ideas as well as those of others (step outside their unknown or hopeful targets/show some originality or take on those of other contributors) ... as well as New Feature requests??? It would be more impacting if FW were to show a true charisma of its own rather than simply following in the footsteps/shadows of LW whilst side-stepping the DRM.

There's so many feature requests that are so worthy of implementation & time spent there-upon to develop. One of which for example is re: size filtering be it initially only post-filtering of search results. In the present climate, I sincerely believe this is in more need than ever.

What FW needs is character. Innovation shows character. Being brave shows character. Adventurism, ... so many words & more to describe what could be done.

Hi LOTR
Exactly when? Impossible to say, of course.

However, the point of FW is not to "sidestep" DRM, but to continue the spirit and work of the current LW project.

If LW.com, the most valuable player in the whole LW.org project, gets knocked off-track by a dirty hit, the project can still continue.

So, IF (and I hope it is a BIG "if") the leaders of LW.com are in effect unfairly forced to restrict the network because they cannot risk the expenses of asking the US courts to confirm their innocence, then FW will have done much to preserve and continue the goals of LW.org.

So, IMHO, I think of FW as the second string player who might have to quarterback a team because the star was taken out by a cheap shot. The 2nd string might have fantasies of improving on the work of the star, but frankly I'm pleased that the main FW folks are being sensible and not trying to fantasize about the uncertain future.

On the other hand, FW has shown a very responsible and credible character by concentrating on getting the present job done. If innovation is considered in the future, I'll be quite interested because they've proven their credibility.

In other words, I'm glad FW has avoided becoming a prima-donna's club

It is actually possible to say when! When LW is dead!

We have tons of ideas but we cannot add/implement them yet because each mod leads to so called conflicts between the FW and LW codebase. As long as LW is alive we'd like to pick up as much code as possible from them.

The whole topic about CVS conflicts is a bit abstract and probably not understandable for non-devs...

Several clients may edit copies of the project concurrently. When they later check-in their changes, the server attempts to merge them. If this fails, for instance because two clients attempted to change the same line in a certain file, then the server denies the second check-in operation and informs the client about the conflict, which the user will need to resolve by hand.

...by hand!!! No way! Work is bad!

I don't care as long as they do not fuxor the network over abuse just like KaZaA lite...

For now, the only legal fork of LW that respects Gnet standards is FW.

I get your point...still, some network acceptable mods would be nice!

RE: take on those of other contributors

well, recent code rejection because it contains certain unwanted portions that could be easily modified to suite the needs of the project, is a pet peeve of mine. *cough*upload queue code*cough*

quality of code is a good point, but!.. why throw away good code when it just needs certain mods to work as-needed.

this intimidates and most likely scares new developers away when the code quality bar is set too high. we wont get contribution at all if the developers think they are wasting their time.

i wasnt even the writer of the code but i felt the sympathy for him.. being rejected because the code was not written exactly as wanted. (which he wasnt even given any guidlines).. he was just bored and took on the feature request list at lw.org.

this guy seemed REALLY talented and needed almost no motivation to start work on a project. but later seemed disinterested because his work went to dev/null. if he had some direction, and was given cvs access to the code, im pretty damn sure frostwire would be a hell of an innovator in features. (he codes pretty damn fast.)

the above scenario reminds me of college...I totally failed an assignment because I couldn't figure out how to do it within the guidelines, and ended up solving it by making up a 3 dimensional array with pointers as opposed to using linked lists w/pointers...it worked, but not even a marginally passing grade..now, I understand the goal of a class being to teach you certain things...but let's face it, in real life the REAL meaning of it all is 'does it work?'

Isn't it possible for contributors to simply contribute to the LimeWire code, which gets used in FrostWire anyway?

That way the LW.com team has a clear incentive to keep in contact with the FrostWire coders, because both projects profit from the other.

FW is formed of open source contributors to LW, so... Our focus is simply to stay current with LW source for now, the new pieces and specific projects will be merged when LW goes DRM.

Ciao
