Exclamation Phex 0.7 released.

This new Phex release is packed with new features and brings an improved interface look.
Changes in this version include:
  • New multi-source download engine.
  • Minimize to system-tray on Windows platforms.
  • Filtering of search results by media type.
  • Download candidate rating.
  • Extensive table configuration to hide/show, auto-resize and sort columns.
  • Interface settings are saved on exit.
  • Big performance improvements.

I can't use it on MacOS X 10.1.4 (JRE 1.3.1). From the command line, it is really slow, and screen redraw is only partial or inexistent. The tabs don't respond to mouse clicks. If I enclose Phex in an executable, it works (until the next time I open Phex), but only if I change the interface theme (MacOS X to Metal, or the other way around). The menus work OK in all conditions.
I get a lot of big, long java error messages in the console, all mentioning the GUI, or the fact of "painting" it.
In the meantime I can't use 0.6.4 because 0.7 changed the format of my phexdownload.xml file.
Oh, and 2D acceleration (still in beta) does not work anymore. It worked perfectly with 0.6.4

Looks good Gregor !

So far found a few minor bugs:
-Can't sort the columns in any screen (by alfabetic order or size)
-The removal of search results acts a bit "funny" But at last there's more search result screens !

Disguisting quote:
I hope that was your first programming practice...

Other Bug:

-I DLed a zipfile (wich was requested with 064 for java1.4), The file finished in 3 segments but was not placed in my download folder, I searched and found it in the Phex programme folder !
A Mp3 I DLed was placed where it should be.

This new Phex release is, as always, amazing... but:

- I cannot sort any table, in any screen.
- (this one is more personal) I do not like the "windows style" buttons in the Download and Search screens, but hey... I had to find something bad.

Very good job. Keep it up.

Regards,
Stv

I have to agree about removing searches being weird. For me it is weird adding them too. When I add a search, it doesn't switch to the new search, I have to switch to it myself in the combo box. When removing a search, it doesn't disappear until I switch to another one in the combo box.

But what was really weird (to me): This was on the precompiled version. When I downloaded the source and compiled it myself, those problems were not there.

Dunno what the difference is, and I can't figure the problem out by looking at the code, as the version of the code I have works!

Hello,

under linux (suse 8.0 with jre 1.3.02) it's the same behaviour the mac OS guy discribed. Phex starts and then only partial redrawing is being done. The Tabs are not useable. But if you switch to motiv look and feel, than everything looks fine.

I missed something in the changelog: I used phex 0.6.4 with the 0.7 option turned on. When a host disconnected or timed out during a download, than the download didn't stop. The downloadrate dropped to 0. Therefore I had five 0Bytes/s after a day and phex did not start new ones, because the limit was reached.

greetings

Hi...

I was first confused by all the different errors you reported. But thanks to MamiyaOtaru note about the different behavior between the precompiled and the self compiled version from the same source I was able to find the problem. It seems to be caused by a compilation option that should only generate bytecode for java 1.3. But actually this seems to cause strange and different behavior on all kind of different Java installation.

I recompiled and tryed to release a Phex 0.7.1 yesterday, but had troubles with uploading some of the files. You can expect the complete release to come out anytime soon. It is almost exactly the same source Phex 0.7 used. Just compiled differently.
This should fix problems with repainting, sorting, adding and removing of searches, and not responding mouse clicks.

It's not the first time I heard that downloaded files are appearing in the Phex directory instead of the download directory. Unfortunatly I was not able to track or reproduce this problem. But I will continue to check what is going wrong.

Sorry for the problems this release caused, I hope Phex 0.7.1 is able to make you happy again.

Gregor

ji,

tried under os2 and works very well. i think better than the 0.6.4, except the impossibility of sorting search-results.
i, too, expect an early 0.7.1 that fixes this thing.
btw: please always make it possible, that it works witth java1.3, cause os2 only has this one available :-/
great client!

thanks, ingmar.
