Hey, I keep getting the following error when trying to compile the code:

kaffe-bin: mem/gc-incremental.c:865: gcMalloc: Assertion `fidx < nrTypes && size != 0' failed.
Aborted

I'm using the latest version of Mandrake, which I'm pretty sure has the necessary Java stuff, but someone will probably correct me if I'm wrong. So just wondering what's shakin and how I can fix it.

In het standard installation on Mandrake 9, there is no J2SE availalbe. you can get the rpm's at mandrakeclub easily.
I'm not sure if the J2SE downloadable from Sun will work, because the new Mandrake is using the new gcc 3.2 which is NOT binary compatible with older versions...

Yes the Java Runtime from Sun will work. Be sure to remove kaffe first if its installed. Install java then add the following to /etc/profile
export PATH="$PATH:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0_02/bin"
modify /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0_02/bin to wherever java was installed
