Can't upload files. Export Host IP as:?
 

I would like to share files, but despite many files, some quite popular, in my 'shared' directories, I have not had any uploads.
My PC has a private IP add., due to a router and switch between the cable modem and PC. I have read elsewhere that: " If you can connect, search and download you don't have to worry about port forwarding or anything of that nature as these activities prove that you can talk to the network."

I am downloading okay, but uploads just aren't happening.
If I check the router and obtain my current Internet Port (Public?) IP, and enter it into the
Setting->Phex Options->General Settings->Firewall/Proxy ...box for "Export Host IP as:",
...will that allow other users to download from me, finally?
What else can I do to make my files accessible?

Have you ever seen Incoming connections in the network tab? Or only Outgoing? If you see Incoming connections then clients are able to reach you and you should also be able to upload.

Usually Phex is able to determine your external IP from other hosts on the network. We you connect to a host the host informs Phex about its external IP. Sometime this can be inaccurate. Just compare the IP Phex uses after connection to the network with your current Internet IP. If they dont match you must export your IP.
But what you need to use on your router or switch is port forwarding. If Phex runs on port 2222 you need to tell your router that incoming request on port 2222 should be forwarded to your local ip on port 2222.

Thanks, Gregor. I Enabled port forwarding, using the Phex "Listening port," and exported my ("Internet port" on the LAN) host IP, and it now seems to be working.
I assume by "incoming connections" you referred to the "messages" report on the Gnutella Net tab? I had been getting LOTS of those. Now finally I can make some of those hits work for my peers....

I'm having the same problem, apparently. I see no incoming hits. I've tried exporting my IP address, but apparently nobody knows I'm here with files to share. I'm able to download with ease, but can't seem to cross the upload hurdle. I'm running on OSX. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks

If you cant see incoming connections on the Gnutella Net tab something blocks others from connecting to you and you will most likely not see any uploads either.

Incoming connections are much more likely to happen compared to uploads. After a few minutes you should see incoming connections.

Do you have anything between Phex and the internet? Like a firewall, proxy, router, security software what ever. Or maybe are in a compay network?
These are all things that can keep connections coming through to you.

Thank you for your reply. I do now see 1 incoming, but still my upload screen won't allow me to share. I believe I'm doing something wrong with my directory, since I see no files on the the upload tab. I've basically set my itunes up as THE directory. Is there some kind of help somewhere concerning directory use? Thanks for helping this newbie!

Beyond which OS you're using, are you behind a router? Or is your machine a standalone? Using personal firewall software?
In my case, I had to set up port forwarding, which is a router function, because my machine was sharing an internet connection on a LAN.
I misunderstood Gregor's question about incoming connections, because I was not seeing the entire content of the "Gnutell Net" tab. The program has a GUI problem with my WIN-NT machine, in which the tabs, buttons, etc. all lack shading and outlines. So often there are things missing from my screen, and I didn't realize that I could pull down the section that displays Connections:
"Remote Host," "Vendor," "Type," "Mode" etc., Below all that info is:
"My Address", which displays the IP address that Phex is communicating to our Gnutella peers. Anyway, in the "Type" column and mentioned above, there is either an "out" or "in" designation. SOMEtimes, at least, after being connected for a while, you should see one or more "In" type connections.
Another possibility is that the number of files you are sharing is small, and no one has tried (by chance) to search download them?
The "Share" tab also has a pulldown section that displays your shared files, and among other info, the "Search count" and "Upload Count." Can you see all that?

So you have navigated through "Setting"--> "Phex Options" ->"Download/Sharing Settings" -->Directories--> and then in the "Shared Directory Settings" area, clicked on "add" and set up a directory that contains music files?
That should do it. The files should appear (it may take a little while) in the "Shared Files" pulldown section of your "Share" tab...
