Some Questions

1. The 'Switch Network' entry in the 'Network' menu: is it functional? It looks like it allows you to use more than one filesharing protocol (like G2, edonkey, etc.).

2. Is there a plugin architecture for this and are any other protocols available yet?

3. Will it eventually be possible to connect to several different networks and return on searches from all of them, like Shareaza does?

4. What is the prospect for rewriting the GUI in SWT?

Currently it only allows you to create private networks. If you like to connect with some friends, give your network a name and exchange IPs. Now only people who know the name of the network and configure Phex accordingly are allowed to connect to you.

No, there are no other protocols available yet.

Yes, it could be possible but it's not supported yet. Mostly because of missing developers.

If you or anybody else likes to rewrite the GUI in SWT you are free to do so and join the project team.
I will support you as good as possible and will also release the SWT GUI with Phex. Phex core and gui is decoupled so it should be possible to switch the GUI implementation.
