Phex Support Please be advised, LeeWare Development is now supporting Phex- We have added 2 servers 330 non-infringing files (CBT, WMV and AVI search terms) Approximately 6GB of technology training materials. For more information visit us online http://www.leeware.com

Just a couple issues ..I have two issues with Phex in its current implementation. - Lack of support for UNC paths one of the most useful features of limewire is the fact that it allows me to point to a UNC path to share files. [\\server_name\Directory] This is convenient for me because the files I host are stored on various different servers and I hate to map drives just to access the content stored on other servers. - No apparent ability to limit the number of incoming connections when running as an ultrapeer. Perhaps these features exist and I'm just not aware of them. Any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm prepared to up the number of servers from 2 to 6 depending on the results of your investigation. Thanks in advance for your support.

Incoming connections The Options->General Settings->Network menu seems to suggest that connections can be set /limited. However, I have also noticed that INCOMING connections seem uncontrolled. I do have broadband connection but wonder if having 60-70 ultrapeer connections might be burdening my system a bit.... Not sure, really. |

I dont see the difference between holding incoming or outgoing connections. What you can do is control the number of total connection you are having in ultrapeer state. But I'm thinking about dropping this option and replace it with a fixed number of around 20 intra ultrapeer connections. If incoming connections are accepted uncontrolled from this configuration option this indicates a bug. I will look into this deeper. I know that there might be different functionalities needed here for things that LeeWare is doing compared to what a average user needs. In the future these options might still be available through a configuration file. I checked the use of UNC paths and I dont have problems to create them on Windows 2000 systems. I can easily share something like \\olymp\fileservice if it is shared by the machine. Can you explain me the steps you are going through to add the UNC path? |

Connectivity Problems and UNC I just want to make sure I understand what your saying. Can we UNC paths in Phex? (YES/NO) I'll explain my situation. My content is distributed across 3 servers right now but will grow to six or more as I publish more content. I can combine my content libraries by doing the following for example: Front-end back-end server A = 200 files (B C) Server B = 300 files (A C) Server C = 500 files (A B) On the front-end I have a copy of LimeWire or (Phex) running per server. On the back-end I create a mesh so that each server hosts its own content plus the content on other servers. I have shut down my Phex servents for now because I left 2 of them trying to connect over a period of about 12 hours and they have a lot of problems establishing and connecting to the network. My suspicion is this client or the other Gnutella clients don't play nice with one another. For example just to test my theory I setup a limewire ultrapeer and I manually attempt to connect my phex hosts to my limewire ultrapeers (nothing-no connection) I setup some limewire clients pointed them to my ultrapeers- they connected and stayed connected until I shut down the ultrapeers. I'm going to leave phex on my systems for now, because I would like to use it so that I can connect to bearshare. I noticed during my testing the ability to make connections to bearshare ultrapeers. If I could get Phex to connect to bearshare ultrapeers and stay connected I would use the client to serve the bearshare community.

UNC Shares Clarifications I just wanted to let you know that I had an opportunity to play around with Phex and I was in fact able to connect using UNC path names. Unlike Limewire I have to specify the subdirectories in order to get this to work correctly. For example This works in phex \\server_name\share_name\Sub_directory In LimeWire I could just use \\server_name\share_name\ I will work on messhing my content library which will take several hours and by tomorrow I should have 6 Phex servers running.

Phex Almost Ready! After several hours of hashing I got 2 / 6 servers ready. The 3rd one just started. It should be finished in a couple hours. After I complete all of the hashing, I'll bring each server online. I think that I have a configuration that will work now. I'll post my progress to this thread.

I did some testing and code review and found out that for me UNC paths are working very good. I could even add UNC paths not existing by just typing in the full path into the File Name field in the directory chooser. Also I checked Limewire source and found out that they are using the same standard Java file chooser Phex is using. There is not much difference at all. Try to add by not having a trailing \ in the path. Maybe this is creating the problem... I attached a picture (hope it worked) of how I added successfully a UNC path. I was not able to find out anything about the unbound incoming connection problem. I stress tested a Phex with incoming connections and the number of connections stayed in the configured range. Once the slots are full incoming connections where rejected and no more outgoing connections attempts where tried. Are you still experimenting this problem? How is your network configuration set up?
