Buncha questions Seems the Phex forum is one of the few that people get answers in. Go Phex! I tried SwapNut and liked it. The interface is very easy to use, the only problem is that nobody logs on. Since Phex seems to have a few users, and I can get files, I'll stick with it. I do have a few questions though. #1 is how to exit the program. The only way that works for me is C-A-D. Without that, the Phex screen will never go away. #2, I seem to be downloading, but the downloads aren't showing in the downloads box anymore. What happened? #3, At the bottom of the screen, it says Downloads: 0,3. Does this mean that I have successfully downloaded 3 files with 0 remaining? Vice-versa? #4, What does that Statistics window do? Never seen it active. #5, In Configure Net Parameters, should I Export my Host IP AS? How do I do that? #6, How does TTL work? What is TTL (Time To Live)? #7, What is the dif between a passive search and a regular search? That's probably enough dumb questions for 1 message. Maybe too many. I imagine there are others out there that want to know too though. Thanx for any answers - correct or close enough! Axx BTW- Thanx for the Control -v paste sugg! Worked great! |

Hi Axx... many of the problems you describe sound to me like you are using the wrong Java version. Phex needs at least Java 1.3. Please check it with "java -version". Which system do you use? That should solve Problem #1, #2, #4 I don't have any other explanation for these problems. #3 That means you have 0 currently running download and 3 download in total. #5 You only need to do that if you have a proxy or want a other IP shown to the public. Just leave the field empty will fit for most users. #6 Yes it's time to live. It means how many hops a message go through the net. A value should not be over 10 at max. Many clients drop to high ttl's a TTL of 5-6 is often enough. #7 A passive search analyzes the searches that go trough your client. It's not consuming bandwith only CPU. But it will biring much fewer results. It is usefull for a long time search. Let it run over night to find sharing hosts. |

Thanx for the reply! I checked my java, and sure enough, there were a few probs with it. I did have the current version, but something was wrong with it. I reinstalled it and tried phex again. I still cant get it to close without ConAltDel, it still doesn't automatically connect, or retry on startup. I found that the downloads page works, but only when I resize the window. Weird huh? If I disconnect from the current network and then reconnect it prompts me for a password. Do I need one? I'm using phex 0.5.6, on ME. I have the latest java (hopefully working right this time), and IE 5.5. Can't seem to install IE6, and wonder if this has some connection. Should I download again, or do you have a better idea? Help, hints, snide comments? Axx |

Hi... that is all very strange what you are describing somehow I still can't really believe all is right with your java installation. Can you please try to go run the Java VM over a command prompt with the a full qualified call. Open a prompt. Go into your phex installation directory where your phex.jar is located. ( Type: "cd /d c:\phex" ) And then call the command: "c:\java\jre1.3\bin\java -jar phex.jar" Of cource you have to replace the path with the directorys on your machine. If Phex prints any error msg onto your console something is definitely wrong. You can send me your error msg to .... You can also try the new Phex version 0.6 that is released shortly. Don't care about the password when connecting to the network. Gregor Last edited by GregorK; April 2nd, 2007 at 10:12 AM. |

Dang GregorK! You are on the ball with the replies! I worked on it a while with no luck, then I completely eliminated Phex from my system and re-downloaded it. Works just as advertized now! Not sure if it was the java problems of before interfereing with the original installation or what, but it's working great now, except for 2 small bugs. It still won't exit without CAD. Don't know why. Also the share files won't appear. They did before, but not since I reloaded. Tried variations on the file path, but it just doesn't want me to share yet. Any more suggestions? I'll try the command line, but not today. Thanx! |

Sorry... but I have almost no idea what it could be except the Java thing. This often make things very unpredictable. If you find out anything new please tell me maybe we can find the problem. Gregor |

Strange but true Thanx as always for being so quick to respond! Today when I opened up Phex, it was back to it's old self. The auto connect didn't, etc.. I tried something new though. In Windows, I opened up the Phex folder (I have the jar files in My Programs) and created a new file in it. I put all the files into the new folder, basically eliminating them. Went back to phex.jar, opened it, and everything worked great! Even the share files were found. I had to reset everything, but it worked. Is there something going on with the settings it saved? Then, as I opened the forum, I see you have released the long awaited v6! I'll install that later today and see what kinda problems that fixes. Thanx as always! |
