Push based gnutella Hi all, Do you think there would be ANY adavantage of augmenting gnutella with a push based information flow. I mean, let us assume that even amongst peerswe are likely to find client-like and server-like peers. i.e, a clientlike peer would conume more data than it would share and the server like peer would share more data than it actually consumes. I such a situation, let us say, there is a hot data file present with jus one/ or mebbe just a few of the nodes in the network and the presence of the file is not yet known to otherr users. So the idea is to push these hot data items accross the networks(amongst server like peers) even before the requests for the data arises. lemme know what you think about the idea, sara |

pushing hot data A hot data file would be (i) something new. (or/and) (ii) a file fer which there was a previous history of unsatisfied requests. (iii)something that a user of the Gnuttela n/w subjectively decides should be 'hot' so, i make an offer of sharing the file to nodes in my hostlist. The nodes in my host list would then decide on whether the file needs to be propogated or not ... well if you think that this is a problem, then we can simply prompt a list of files to the user of the destination node and let him decide which ones need to be selected. .. .., Such a scheme in my opinion would also be very useful when we explore possibilities of 'grouping' gnutella users., searching based on keywords etc. .. NEEDLESS TO SAY BRITNEY SPEAR'S NEWEST ALBUM IS A HOT FILE. |

Freenet does this content pushing already. You would need to encrypt the pushed content. The downloads that have queues, which the 2.7 version of LimeWire will have, would be another way of marking the hot files. If people are lining up to get the file then it must be in demand. |

speeding up "hot files" partial file uploading helps with this somewhat. if a client can start uploading files even before it's done downloading them, it helps distribute it faster. it also uploads it before the user moves it to CD or a non-shared folder. Bitzi or more metadata could help determine which are 'hot' (in-demand?) files. A feature to allow users to enter comments about a file that would get added to the metadata of the file would help with many things I think. Hmmm that breaks with privacy however... Damn, privacy concerns are really just to protect us all from the government, and corporate lawyers. A feature to "replace corrupt politicians, political parties, and greedy corporate managers" would go a long way to alleviate this I wonder how this could be implemented... |
